Veteran folk-rockers Fairport Convention celebrate 45 years on the road with special guests Tarras, 6-piece folk-rock band from the North of England, John 'Fake Thackray' Watterson, keeping alive the repertoire of comic songs by the late, great Jake Thackray, brilliant ragtime and jazz guitarist John James and the ever-colourful Exmouth Shanty Men.

RAMM receives donation of a scientifically valuable insect collection

Devon charity, the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, has donated a large collection of butterflies, moths and other insects to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery in Exeter.

The Conservation Trust oversees Paignton Zoo, Slapton Ley, Living Coasts and Newquay Zoo and the specimens were collected by Dr David Stradling, the former Chairman, who passed away in July 2012 after a long illness. His collection was started in the 1950s and includes specimens from the UK, Switzerland, Trinidad, Argentina and Botswana.

Half a million South West workers give bosses £4,500 for free, says TUC

Half a million people in the South West last year gave their employers £4,500 worth of work for free, according to a TUC survey released today, the ninth annual Work Your Proper Hours Day.

The study of official figures shows that 447,063 workers in the region regularly put in six and a half hours a week more than their contracted hours without getting paid for it.

Nigel Costley, regional secretary of the South West TUC, said: “Thousands of South West workers go above and beyond the call of duty each year to ensure their businesses and organisations stay afloat.

BBC TV cameras in Sidmouth today for Big Decision Day at Knowle

BBC TV will be reporting live from Knowle today, Friday 1 March, as people arrive for the controversial Development Management Committee Meeting, which starts at 2pm.

A large public presence is expected, so an extra room adjoining the Council Chamber will be made available. Doors open at 1.30pm.

The DMC has been recommended to approve the Outline Planning Application for Knowle, ‘as part of its aspirations to relocate‘, although many believe the OPA Documents are unsound.

Exeter’s newest record label seeks to develop local music scene

On 17th February, indie-rock band The Maratones’ new album was released. What made this release different from any other preceding it was that it was the first for new Exeter record label PsychoBabble Records. Sam Bigwood - an Enterprise Academy student at Exeter College - created it to promote local music and to help bands struggling to record or release their music.

Hopeful signs for civil contractors in the South and South West

Civil engineering contractors detect signs of a modest turnaround in their fortunes in the fourth quarter of 2012.

After two consecutive quarters of clear decline, members of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) are now equally split between those whose workload is declining and those for whom it is increasing.

Less good news is that members’ order books show a second consecutive decline for the quarter. There were 5% more firms reporting declining orders than increasing orders.

Police appeal for help following spate of shoplifting offences in Devon

Police are appealing to the public for help following a string of shoplifting offences in Devon. The four offences, which police believe involve the same men, occurred on the same day, 1 February, at shops in Exmouth, Teignmouth, Paignton and Torquay. At the Co-op in Dartmouth Road, Paignton at noon two men entered the rear of the store and stole 27 cases of cigarettes, cigars and tobacco products and four cases of chewing gum, total value in excess of £2,000. Alzheimer’s report highlights deeper problem, says Vitalise

National disability charity Vitalise says that the shock findings of a new Alzheimer’s Society report into residential care for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia point to an even deeper problem.

Responding to the Alzheimer’s Society’s new report, ‘Low Expectations’, which found that only 41% of relatives of loved ones with Alzheimer’s or dementia said they enjoyed a good quality of life in residential care, Vitalise’s research has revealed that the problem extends to people with other disabilities and their carers too.
