The chips are down for traditional vinegar as more Brits move to balsamic

It’s been a British kitchen and restaurant table staple for more than 100 years, but now Brits are falling out of love with traditional malt vinegar.

Until recently most homes would keep a bottle of malt vinegar handy as the classic condiment for fish and chips or, especially with the older generation, as a pickling agent for eggs, onions and other vegetables.

But now with both fish and chip shops and pickling in decline, demand for vinegar has fallen by four per cent in the last year across all retailers (Kantar Worldpanel data Jan 2013).

The chance for local businesses to get involved with Great Gorillas

This summer, Exeter and Torbay are going to have some rather unusual visitors. To mark Paignton Zoo’s 90th anniversary, lifesize gorilla sculptures will be inhabiting the open spaces and parks of Exeter and Torbay – each showcasing their own individual art, designed by local artists.

Arriving at the end of July with a Great Gorilla Flotilla in Torbay, the gorillas will be with us for 10 weeks throughout the summer, giving locals and visitors alike the chance to get up close to these magnificent pieces of work. With just two weeks left to sign up for a place in Plymouth’s Half Marathon 2013, organisers GO2 announce that Plymouth Olympians Heather Fell, Antony James, Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow will sound the klaxon to start the race.

Inactive lifestyles kill an estimated 36,815 people in England each year

Lack of physical activity could cause as many as 36,815 premature deaths in England each year, according to statistics released today by the South West Public Health Observatory (SWPHO) and charity Sustrans.

The statistics have been produced to help local authorities estimate how much they could reduce death and illness by promoting physical activity.

They show that current levels of physical activity among people aged 40-79 are low across England and that major health gains could be made if they increased.
