Otterton Primary School pupils get to grips with local democracy at East Devon

Children from Otterton Primary School have been finding out what it’s like running a council.

Thirteen Year 6 students were welcomed by East Devon District Council on Friday 1 March, having arranged special activities such as debating a pretend planning application, deciding how to spend a hypothetical £5000 on community projects in Otterton and even designing the perfect councillor.

The council set up the event after an approach from the school, which had previously taken part in the annual "National Take Over Day" and wanted a new set of pupils to experience a similar...

Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau “braced” for welfare reforms

Local charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, is responding to a new report from the Resolution Foundation that warns that 3.2 million of the poorest households in the Country will see increases to their Council Tax bills from April.

Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau Chief Executive, Steve Barriball said:

"We are bracing ourselves for an influx of people on low incomes who will build up arrears that they can't pay. A 10% cut in support for council tax gives local authorities little choice other than to chase much-needed revenue from the poorest residents. We are deeply...

My first 100 days in office by Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg

Hello, I am writing this on my 100th day in office. If I’m honest, it feels more like 100 minutes because we’ve packed so much in to these first three months, and at times there’s hardly been time to catch my breath.

I am really pleased with what I’ve managed to achieve so far. The appointment of a new Chief Constable, publication of the police and crime plan and setting the budget quite rightly took a good deal of thought and hard work, and I suspect you wouldn’t want it any other way.

I do realise that many of you are yet to be convinced about the need for a Police and...

Flamingos need friends too, says University of Exeter study

UK scientists are embarking on a four-year study of flamingo behaviour to explore how their relationships could be key to improving breeding success and the overall welfare of captive flocks. The University of Exeter, working with the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) at Slimbridge, will apply knowledge on animal social networks originally developed through research on Trinidadian guppies and more recently through studying dairy cattle herd interactions.

The first stage of the research, led by Dr Darren Croft from Psychology at the University of Exeter’s Animal Behaviour Research...
