Local coffee shop makes it into national Top 50

Devon Coffee, the new speciality coffee shop in Queen Street, Exeter, has been included in The Independent's Top 50 Coffee Shops. Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood, one of the judges and the UK Barista champion/owner of Colonna & Smalls, called Coffee Devon: “A classic independent coffee shop in the centre of Exeter. Travellers on the B3137 should be very wary

Recently accidents on the road from Tiverton to Witheridge have been frequent and nasty.

On Monday 7th of January there was a head-on crash between Withleigh and Page's Cross, leaving the two cars involved in pieces. Today there have been rumours of a crash just outside of Petroc College in Tiverton.

And at around midday there was nearly a fatal accident near Cruwys Morchard woods, again. An elderly man was waiting to turn into Page's Cross this morning, when a reckless driver smashed straight into the back of him.

Serious road collision causes tailbacks on A38 at Plymouth

Update: The A38 eastbound was closed at 4.50pm for approximately 30 minutes.

An elderly gentleman is in hospital with what is described as a serious neck injury.

The collision occured just before the Crownhill turnoff, so traffic is now flowing okay around the Manadon roundabout.

Earlier: Police and emergency services are currently at the scene of a serious road collision on the A38 at Plymouth.

An HGV and a Rover car were in collision on the eastbound carriageway just before Manadon junction around 1.50pm today (9th January).

When Brahms wrote his German Requiem, critics considered it the fulfilment of Schumann's prophecy that Brahms was a genius. Night-time closures planned on A30 westbound

Overnight closures are planned on the A30 westbound from Daisymount Junction to the junction of the A30/C832 near M5 Junction 29 later this month.

The closures will be over five consecutive nights from Monday 21 to Friday 25 January from 8pm to 6am to enable overhead gantry signs to be replaced over the westbound A30.

During the closure of the A30 westbound, the A30 Daisymount Junction westbound on-slip will also be closed as well as the Airport Junction westbound on-slip.

Diversions will also be in place. A30 westbound traffic will be diverted from Daisymount...

RMT announce rise in membership over last year

Rail, maritime and transport union RMT announced today that the organisation has continued to increase its membership in the past twelve months in the teeth of the most savage attacks on jobs and working conditions for a generation.

Membership figures released by the union today show that RMT has put on a net gain of 1,456 members through 2012, taking the total to 77,549 – an annual growth of nearly 2% in the most challenging circumstances.

The union has increased its membership year-on-year from the 59,277 total when General Secretary Bob Crow was elected in 2002.

Double celebration for rapidly improving Devon primary

Staff and pupils at a Newton Abbot primary are beginning the New Year with a double celebration after education inspectors judged that every aspect of school life was good or better.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary was judged satisfactory by education inspectors in 2009. But now every aspect of life at the 120-pupil school is good or better. That improvement has come at a time when school inspectors have been getting tougher with their judgements and they say St Joseph’s is set to get even better.

NICE guidance supports new device for healing bones

NICE has today (9th January), published new medical technology guidance supporting the use of a device to heal fractured bones.

The NICE guidance advises that the EXOGEN ultrasound bone healing system benefits patients and the NHS when used for treating long bone fractures with non-union (bone fractures that have failed to heal after 9 months). However, the case for adopting EXOGEN routinely for long bone fractures with delayed healing, that is, fractures which do not show radiological evidence of healing after 3 months, wasn't supported because of uncertainties in the evidence....

Police concerned for missing teenager from Ivybridge

Police are concerned for the welfare of 18-year-old man Jamie Grewal, who has gone missing from the Ivybridge area.

He was last seen last on Friday afternoon, 4th January, after having a drink with friends after work in the Abbey Inn pub at Buckfastleigh during lunchtime. He was then dropped off in Ivybridge around 1.30pm to 2pm.

He has not been seen or heard from since that time.

Jamie is described as five feet five inches tall, of very slim build with dark brown, short hair.

He was last seen wearing a turquoise blue jacket with jeans and trainers.
