Schools Compete for Sporting Glory in Devon

Young people from Devon are getting the opportunity to show off their sporting talents this Friday 28 June 2013 as they compete in a Sainsbury’s School Games Festival.

Future sporting stars could be unearthed at the event at Exeter as young people compete across a range of sports including Rounders, Aquathlon, Athletics, Golf, Indoor Rowing, Mini Tennis and Orienteering.

Exeter residents dusting off their 'dancing' trainers for Cancer Research UK

Next Sunday, 30 brave participants from Exeter and beyond, will be dusting off their trainers and perfecting their shimmying at 'The Ultimate Danceathon' for Cancer Research UK. Three local instructors will be joining forces to deliver three hours of dance fitness. Included in the day will be the ever-popular 'Zumba', up-and-coming Bollywood fitness sensation 'Just Jhoom!', and 'Swagga Fit'; a fantastic new workout developed by the local 'Vibes Dance Company'!

Dame Kelly Holmes' charity to inspire next generation in Devon

The Dame Kelly Holmes (DKH) Legacy Trust’s team of world-class athletes will be in Plymouth this June to help inspire the next generation.

The double Olympic champion’s charity is running its ‘Get on Track’ programme, where elite athletes mentor young people to get them into employment, education or training, as well as motivating them to lead healthier lifestyles and take part in sport on a regular basis. The DKH Legacy Trust will be working alongside Active Devon and the Plymouth YMCA to help support the group.

Sport clubs across the Exeter, East and Mid Devon area are taking up the opportunity of free support to help them run their club and grow their membership, making the most of the workshops on funding and marketing through social media on offer on the night.

Funding boost for legacy programme that’s inspired 3,500 young people in Devon to play sport

Thousands more young people in Devon are to benefit from the sporting legacy after Sport England announced an extra £24 million to expand and extend its successful Sportivate programme.

The National Lottery funding means Sportivate can continue helping 14- to 25-year-olds to get involved in sports from judo and tennis to wakeboarding and parkour until 2017.

The initiative is run in Devon by County Sport Partnership, Active Devon. New figures shows that 3,521 teenagers and young adults in the county have already benefitted from free or discounted six-to-eight week sports...

Children shine at School Games despite icy conditions

Over a thousand young people from across Devon braved freezing conditions to shine at this week’s Devon Winter School Games, part of the national Sainsbury’s School Games, held at the University of Exeter at St Luke’s Science and Sports College.

Nine different sports were on offer, with the only casualty of the poor weather conditions being the cycling competition, cancelled due to a flooded course. The children bravely battled through the flurries of snow to compete in football, hockey and rugby. Those competing at netball were luckier, taking advantage of the new covered courts...

Active Devon has today announced the finalists of the prestigious Devon Sports Awards.

Running for over ten years, the awards attract hundreds of nominations each year, but this year saw a record number of nominations that were judged by an independent panel of experts last week.

A new Special Olympics club in Exeter will celebrate gaining full accreditation from Special Olympics GB in an official opening this week.
