Exeter charity invests in riding simulator

Based on a 14 acre campus in Topsham Road, Exeter, WESC Foundation (WESC) - The Specialist Centre for Visual Impairment - provide education, health, care, therapy and mobility. Riding therapy is often used as a prescribed physiotherapy to help to mobilise learners. The WESC therapy team welcomed the delivery of a magnificent black stallion named ‘Winston’, a bespoke designed Horse Simulator.

Volunteers underpin work of Exeter cancer charity

Today (June 1) marks the start of national Volunteers’ Week and Exeter-based FORCE Cancer Charity has revealed the latest figures about the value of time given freely given by its supporters.

In 2015 volunteers racked up more than 19,450 hours for the charity, which offers face-to-face support to anyone locally affected by cancer.

That’s worth an estimated £125,000 – a vital contribution to an organisation that offers all of its services free of charge, receives no Government funding and needs to raise £1.2 million every year to maintain them.

WESC on par for successful charity golf day

WESC held their charity golf day at Exeter Golf & Country Club on 12 May sponsored by ITEC. With a record 17 four-ball teams entering and over £7,000 raised, the Specialist Centre for Visual Impairment declared 2016 as their most successful charity golf day to date.

The winning Team ‘Fantastic Four’ made up of: Paul Laverick, Neil Gauntlett, Mark Wightman and Iain Creer were each presented with a bottle of champagne and a four-ball voucher courtesy of Exeter Golf & Country Club. Local business people jailed for charity

Nine well known members of the business community have been ‘jailed’ at Exeter Castle and have to raise a bail of £999 for Children’s Hospice South West in order to be released.

Each ‘prisoner’ has been charged with a fictitious crime and they will be held at the castle until they raise their bail money - but they only have a few hours to ensure they reach their bail targets.

With access to phone and Wi-Fi they are relying on friends, family, colleagues, suppliers and customers to make donations to their online donation pages.

Senior police team set off on charity ride

Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer and a team of senior police riders from Devon, Cornwall and Dorset got on their bikes today to begin a 225-mile cross-border cycle challenge in aid of local charities.

The team of 20 police officers and staff from the two police forces left from Christchurch police station in Dorset this morning and are aiming to cycle to Land’s End in Cornwall in three days.

They will pedal through a county each day before reaching their destination on Sunday evening.
