Peter Millett, a well-known County Probation Officer who worked in Mid and East Devon, Exeter Prison and was one of a number of outstanding Probation Liaison Officers to the Crown Court, has died aged 90. A wise and charming man of great integrity, he was an important influence on those he came into contact with during his twenty years with the then Devon Probation Service. He epitomised all that was best in that role: exercising a disciplined discretion while encouraging someone who might potentially be dangerous to face up to their responsibilities to both courts and the community....

Tributes were paid to Joyce Cann, president of the Dartmoor Folk Festival and wife of the event founder, the late Bob Cann, at her funeral service held at St Andrew's Church in South Tawton.

Joyce was born in the parish of South Zeal, where she spent much of her life.

She was born Edna 'Joyce' Sampson on June 30, 1925 to Maria and William Sampson, one of three children, with an older sister called Dorothy, and a younger brother William.

Cancer death rates drop in South West

People across the South West are being urged to show their support for World Cancer Day today (February 4) as Cancer Research UK releases new figures revealing that cancer death rates in the region have fallen by 9 per cent over the last 10 years.

The charity is encouraging everyone in the region to wear a Unity Band or make a donation to demonstrate their support for people affected by cancer.

Woman dies in head-on crash in East Devon

Police are appealing for witnesses after a fatal crash in East Devon.

At approximately 6pm on Saturday 30 January two vehicles were involved in a head on collision on the A35 Charmouth Road, Axminster.

A Honda car from the Dorset area and a Vauxhall Zafira from the Isle of Wight were involved in the collision.

As a result a 46-year-old woman from the Isle of Wight received fatal injuries.

Two other occupants of the same vehicle remain in a critical condition in Hospital.

Next of kin have been informed and enquiries are ongoing.

Tributes paid to man killed in Devon crash

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man died following a collision near Barnstaple.

John Spurling (pictured), 58, from Barnstaple, who was driving the car invovled and was the only occupant in the vehicle, died at the scene.

The car collided with a hedge and rolled on the B3232 between Charlacottt Cross and Prospect Corner near Newton Tracey at around 11.30am on Sunday 24 January.

The car involved was a blue and red DRK, a two-seated and three-wheeler open-top vehicle. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Search for missing dog Barney who fled fatal crash

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses after a fatal road traffic collision on the A374 at Torpoint in which a woman pensioner was killed on Monday evening, January 25, 2016.

The collision occurred at around 5.15pm near to Anthony House when the pedestrian 72-year-old Jennifer Lowden, from Torpoint, was involved in a collision with a red Nissan Micra car.

Ms Lowden was treated at the scene by air ambulance paramedics, but died a short time later.

Police would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or been in the area of the A374 at the...

Pensioner found dead following house fire

Members of the public are being asked to keep an eye on their neighbours at Christmas to help keep them safe from fire.

The appeal follows a fire in Mount Dinham, Exeter, on 10 December, during which firefighters discovered the body of a man.

Three fire crews attended the incident and extinguished the fire. The 89-year-old man was found close to a gas fire in a ground floor lounge.

Investigations are continuing into the incident and a report will be prepared for the Coroner but there have been several fire-related deaths that Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue...

Man arrested after woman found dead in East Devon

Police are investigating the death of a woman found in a vehicle in East Devon.

Following information received police attended the area of Fenny Bridges in East Devon at around 4pm on Wednesday 2nd December.

A woman’s body was found in a vehicle in this area.

She has yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be a 71-year-old local woman.

A forensic post mortem will be carried out later today.

Investigating and scene of crime officers will today continue an examination of a vehicle and the area in Fenny Bridges where it was discovered....

Appeal to trace relatives of Bradford man

The Bradford Coroner is appealing for information to trace Devon relatives of Edward Ireland, 69, who died in Bradford on 28 September.

Mr Ireland died of natural causes at his home in Farside Green with no suspicious circumstances. It is thought that he has relatives living in the Devon and Bath areas.

Any relatives, or anyone who has information about his next of kin, should contact Symone Holmes at the Bradford Coroner’s Office on: 01274 475299.

Road deaths and serious injuries rise

Brake, the road safety charity, is calling on the government to show strong leadership and reintroduce causality reduction targets as the Department for Transport publishes its Reported Road Casualties in Great Britain Annual Report for 2014. It shows that 1,775 people died on the roads (a 4% increase on the year before). 22,807 more were seriously injured (a 5% annual increase).

Casualties of all severities rose to 194,477 in Great Britain in 2014, an increase of 6% from 2013, interrupting what was a steady downward trend since 1997.
