Orphaned donkey foal has new home for Christmas

A week-old orphaned donkey foal has been given a forever home with The Donkey Sanctuary, after its mother died shortly after giving birth. The foal was relinquished into the care of The Donkey Sanctuary by its owner, who wanted to give it the best start in life after its mother tragically died after suffering complications during foaling. Sadly, despite veterinary care and the best efforts of the donkey’s owner, her condition did not improve and the kindest thing to do was to put her to sleep. Calling wildlife and countryside photographers

East Devon District Council has launched a competition to find the best photographs of the East Devon Countryside for the Wild East Devon 2019 calendar.

The competition opens on Sunday 1 July 2018 and entries can be sent until Friday 31 August.

All photographs must be taken in East Devon and can be of views, wildlife, wildflowers or trees.

Entrants can enter up to three of their best, high resolution photographs in the competition by emailing them to wild@eastdevon.gov.uk

Concern at increase in repossession actions

Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, has raised concerns about an overall 3.8% increase in the number of housing repossession cases listed at Exeter County Court in the six-month period ending 30th September. This is in comparison to the same period in 2016.

Steve Barriball, Citizens Advice Exeter Chief Executive, said: “In the last six-months there were 296 cases listed for repossession, an overall 3.8% increase, or 11 cases, on the previous year. However, there was a small reduction in mortgage repossessions, which were down by four cases.

Exmouth Leisure Centre has been awarded £300,000 of National Lottery funding to help refurbish its swimming pool facilities.

Five projects in the South West are to benefit from Sport England funding. The National Lottery-funded Improvement Fund helps sports and leisure clubs upgrade their facilities.

The Green Party has condemned Labour’s plans for a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) across the city centre, condemning them as ‘muddled thinking’ which will fail to help local residents or businesses.

South West High streets are set to become ‘dementia friendly’ as several major retailers commit to offering their staff training to help those with the condition. The initiative launched by the Alzhiemer’s society will see staff at 60 Homebase and Argos stores as well as some branches of Marks and Spencer and Lloyds bank train to become ‘Dementia Friends’ who help people with dementia live more independently.
