Fatherford bridge officially opens

The £380,000 Fatherford bridge, east of Okehampton, provides cyclists and pedestrians with a safer crossing over the railway line than the existing road bridge over the railway line.

Although the existing bridge has footpaths on its approach, the structure itself is narrow and does not have a path.

The new bridge separates pedestrians and cyclists from road traffic. As well as improving safety it will also enable further development of land east of the bridge, allowing the creation of a safe crossing point across Exeter Road (B3260) for the Granite and Gears Cycle route...

Is your driving licence still valid?

This month sees the biggest change to driving licences in almost twenty years.

From 8 June 2015, the paper counterpart to the photocard driving licence will not be valid and will no longer be issued by DVLA.

There will be no change to the current photocard driving licence or paper driving licence.

Any paper driving licences issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998, will remain valid. If you need to update your name, address or renew your licence, your paper driving licence will be replaced with a photocard driving licence only.

Oil tanker collision leaves woman injured

A serious collision between an oil tanker and a car closed the A35 near Honiton for several hours today.

Two fire appliances from Honiton, one appliance from Colyton, the Heavy Rescue Vehicle from Middlemoor and the water carrier from Danes Castle were sent to a report of a road traffic collision involving a car and an oil tanker near Home Farm Hotel in Wilmington, near Honiton shortly after 11am.

On arrival crews confirmed that the collision involved a car and a road tanker and that one female person was trapped in the car.

The female was released by fire crews...

Two arrested and cannabis seized following drugs warrant

Police in Okehampton have arrested two men following the execution of a drugs warrant.

Following community intelligence and concerns officers executed a warrant obtained under the Misuse of Drugs Act at a property in Fore Street, Okehampton during the afternoon of Thursday 4 June.

Following a search of the premises approximately fifty bags of suspected herbal cannabis were seized.

Two men aged 23 and 22 years were arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class B controlled drug with the intent to supply.

Respected police officer retires after 46 years service

Colleagues past and present gathered to bid farewell to a respected colleague, Jeff Mead, on Wednessday 3 June who has retired after serving 46 years with Devon & Cornwall Police as both an officer and police staff member.

Jeff joined the Force in May 1969 as a Police Constable, and served in Torquay, Bideford, Exeter Traffic, HQ PNC, and Newton Abbot CID.

He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1984 serving in both the Exeter and HQ Communications Departments, Heavitree Road and Exmouth police stations, before retiring in 1999.

Recycle Devon continues its series of public, free to attend repair, refurbishment and upcycling events to take place throughout 2015. The events will pass on skills and ideas to keep bikes, electrical goods, furniture, clothes and other textiles from going to waste.
