Burglars are looking to hit the jackpot as Black Friday bargains and Christmas presents boost the value of home contents by more than a third this weekend, home security experts have warned. Millions of pounds will be spent buying Christmas presents this weekend as most of the UK gets its monthly pay-cheque today and scoops up Black Friday bargains in readiness for Christmas. And those bargains, plus Christmas present purchases, means UK homes are an easily accessible treasure trove for heartless thieves over the next few weeks, according to the report by National home security company...
Environment secretary Liz Truss MP has told today’s Devon NFU annual meeting that she was ‘absolutely committed’ to eradicating bovine TB and the Government would ‘act decisively’ in order to tackle animal disease.
"We have proceeded to cull despite loud objections and have taken the necessary action," she said
Ms Truss acknowledged that many farmers are frustrated with the lack of any announcements about the roll-out of the pilot badger culls and with increasing cattle control measures (in particular the ‘ten mile’ rule) but maintained that these had to form part of the...

The final section of a walking and cycling route linking Dartmoor to Plymouth was opened to the public on Friday 28 November.
The development of the Clearbrook Ramp project, near Yelverton, has been the final hurdle in making Drake’s Trail, between Plymouth and Tavistock, accessible to all cyclists and less able users. This section of the off-road route has been funded by Devon County Council and the Department for Transport as part of the £7 million “Granite and Gears” programme designed to improve cycle access to, and within, Dartmoor National Park.

Inspired by the run-away hit movie produced by Warner Bros, this very special train ride is inspired by magic and designed to delight and inspire your family this festive season.
The Polar Express train makes a mystical round-trip journey to the North Pole. The characters of the story come to life with the conductor punching away at the children’s golden tickets, chefs dancing and delivering hot chocolate and cookies, and the doubting hobo wandering through the train. The story is read aloud and the music from the movie plays for all the kids to sing along.
Some of the most vulnerable people in Devon will be hit by the Government’s plans to stop funding for local welfare next year, Devon County Council has warned.

The local welfare assistance schemes provide help to those facing a crisis or changing circumstances. The schemes aim to stabilise the immediate crisis by providing help such as...
More than six months after the National Review of Asthma Deaths highlighted the complacency about asthma care, research from Asthma UK published today shows that almost 8 out of 10 people in the South West are still not receiving care that meets the most basic clinical standards (79%).1 This is despite the fact that good basic asthma care prevents life-threatening asthma attacks and needless hospital admissions.
The research highlighted a shocking variation in care across the UK. Londoners fared worse than any other region, with only 14% of people in the capital receiving care that...
An official opening ceremony has been held to mark the completion of the final stretch of the Exe Estuary Trail.
The final £1.6 million section of the trail, which links Turf Lock and Powderham, has seen the development of a three-metre wide off-road path and newly constructed bridge, near the existing level crossing at Powderham.
It means that the 16 mile route around the Estuary, can now be enjoyed in its entirety for the first time. The predominantly off-road network, designed by Devon County Council, now links Exmouth to Dawlish Warren, via Topsham and Exeter, and forms...
