Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue have reported that it received several calls from the public regarding a building fire in a garage in the St Thomas area of Exeter.
A Fire Service spokesperson said: "Two pumps from Middlemoor and Danes Castle were mobilised to attend the incident, and a third appliance was also required due to the increased calls from the public.
"Four breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and a covering jet were used to control the fire. An ambulance was requested to assist one minor casualty at the incident suffering from smoke inhalation. A...
Devon's network of Work Hubs is continuing to grow with three Hubs fully operational, one more lined up to open next month and an 'associate' Hub in Exeter now part of the group.
The Work Hub scheme evolved in early 2011 when talk began of setting up facilities to help people who worked from home, were self employed or starting up a new business.
It is estimated that around 85,000 people (20% of the working age population) in Devon are home-based, making the Work Hub concept a natural path to follow.
In late 2011, Devon County Council with part funding from the...
Screenplays of Laurence Olivier’s unmade film version of Macbeth , widely thought to have been lost, have been uncovered by a University of Exeter academic. English Lecturer Dr Jennifer Barnes located 13 previously unstudied versions of the 1950s screenplay in the Laurence Olivier Archive at the British Library.
Macbeth was to be Olivier’s fourth and last cinematic Shakespeare adaptation. However the proposed film proved to be an “impossible monster”, a phrase used by Olivier to describe his struggle with grasping the role and equally applicable to the failed negotiations...
Offered the opportunity by Exeter Phoenix to take part in a new one-day workshop at the lively arts centre and write about it for The Exeter Daily , I agreed with alacrity. I signed up for 'Experimental Drawing' thinking it might give my drawing practice the kick-start it needed.
The group of ten who gathered on Monday morning came with widely differing experience and expectations. ‘Experimental’ could sound intimidating, but at least one participant interpreted it as open to those with little technical expertise. This proved to be true as there was no assumed knowledge and no...
The number of unemployed young people under the age of 25 has again fallen this month from 2,700 in November to 2,675 in December - a decrease of 0.9%, following the national trend.
Significantly this figure is nearly 20% lower than in December 2011.
The total number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance has increased by only 66 claimants between November and December from 9,207 to 9,273, however, this is not unexpected given the seasonal nature of Devon’s labour market.
The proportion of working age population claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance remains at 2% - well...
British pig farmers are challenging food manufacturers, retailers and caterers to give a public commitment that they are not selling illegally produced meat from farms that are flouting new European welfare legislation outlawing the prolonged confinement of sows in individual cages, known as “stalls”.
They have set up a website Wall-of-Fame-and-Shame which will list companies that have pledged to source imported pork products only from farms that are operating legally.
All companies selling imported pork and pork products are being urged by Britain’s National Pig...
The snow is well and truly falling in Exeter City Centre, however it is not due to last according to weather reports. The snow is scheduled to change to light rain from approximately midday.
Most delays around the City have cleared post-rush hour, however there are reports of slow traffic and a lane closed on the A380 Telegraph Hill in both directions in Ashcombe at the B3192 junction, because of snow.
The Exeter Daily has joined forces with Active Devon and the Exeter Foundation to launch a county-wide sports awards event to promote all that is best about local sport in 2013.
Commuters and other road users are being urged to take care around Devon this evening as heavy snow is forecast.
Devon County Council, the Highways Agency, and Devon and Cornwall Police are advising drivers to check the weather forecast and road conditions before they set out.
