Drivers urged to drive with caution due to high winds

People across Devon are being urged to take extra care when travelling this evening and tomorrow with high winds and rain expected in some parts of Devon. (Monday and Tuesday 13/14 January).

High winds are forecast until midnight tonight and tomorrow. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for the remainder of today and from 12 noon Tuesday 14 January until 12 midnight.

Dunsford Road by Exonia Park in Exeter is currently closed due to a large fallen tree.

East Devon District Council has updated and extended the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page of the Sidmouth and East Beach Management Plan (BMP) section on the East Devon website to incorporate a number of recent developments within the scheme, which it was felt would be beneficial to the public to have further explanation.

The BMP FAQs are designed to help improve public understanding of the scheme and explain potentially complex concepts and terminology, as well as to provide background to the scheme to date and details of the parties involved.

Overnight closures planned for Bridge Road

Bridge Road in Exeter will be closed overnight next week (w/c Monday 13 January) while repairs are carried out to the Swing Bridge.

The repairs will aim to resolve a mechanical issue that has developed with the Swing Bridge and has increased the time it takes to open and close the bridge.

The road is due to be closed from 7pm until 7am from Monday to Thursday next week, starting on the evening of Monday 13 January.

The finalists for the 2020 BETA Business Awards, recognising companies and individuals making significant contributions to the equestrian industry, have been announced. Winners of the British Equestrian Trade Association’s annual awards will be revealed during the BETA Gala Dinner, at the National Motorcycle Museum, near Birmingham, on Monday 20 January.

University and Hospiscare to recycle Christmas trees

The University of Exeter and Hospiscare will team up to recycle Christmas trees and support terminally ill people and their families.

Hospiscare’s vans will collect trees from Exeter, Exminster and Cranbrook between 11-17 January, in exchange for a £10 donation.

Trees will then be taken to the University’s Streatham Campus to be chipped by the grounds team, with help from Bicton College agriculture students.

Chippings will be given to the Avanti Hall School (previously the Steiner Academy) or used to improve local footpaths.

STC Expeditions announces trial of a four-day working week

Exeter based travel company, STC Expeditions, has announced it is conducting a 12-week trial of a four day working week, starting 6th January 2020. Founded in 2006, STC Expeditions is a specialist educational travel and school expedition company, arranging ethical and adventurous school trips to destinations across Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The trial will involve all full-time employees cutting their hours by 20% whilst retaining full pay. A rota system will ensure the office remains open as usual from Monday to Friday.

Football comes to the races on Tuesday, January 14 when Exeter Racecourse teams up with Exeter City Football Club for a day out on Haldon Hill.
