Research from Guide Dogs reveals fireworks are biggest cause of dog anxiety

As we get ready to celebrate Bonfire Night and Diwali this year, 42% of dog owners have voted fireworks night as the worst night of their year. The research for charity Guide Dogs revealed that fireworks were the biggest cause of dog anxiety (42%) coming in ahead of sudden noises (35%), thunder (33%), being at the vet (28%), other dogs (25%) and being alone (20%).

A new online film has been launched for East Devon Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Trust’s Heath Week (this week), designed to help dog owners and walkers enjoy the great British countryside safely this summer.

The first film featuring dog behaviourist Natalie Light, is the first in a series of five bite-size films featuring top tips to be released over the summer. Did you know your pet can suffer from kidney stones? Kidney problems also afflict dogs, some breeds more so than others. The main culprit in these kidney stones is an organic compound called purine. This is a nitrogenous compound found in all protein foods including meats, seafood, legumes and even spinach.

Not that all foods containing purine are bad. Purine is like cholesterol. It is only harmful in high levels. Foods with high levels of purine are problematic because this compound leads to high levels of uric acid when these foods are digested. Uric acid is not very soluble....

Trainee guide dogs go back to school in Exeter

After a three-month break due to the Covid-19 outbreak, trainee guide dogs have been able to re-start their training in the south west, getting them ready to become life-changing guides.

In March, sight loss charity Guide Dogs closed its local training teams in line with Government advice, which meant around 55 trainee guide dogs across the region had to take a break.

The dogs were boarded full-time with local volunteers and all training with the local community team, based in Marsh Barton, was stopped.

Dog owners warned after pet caught in fox trap

Dog owners have been warned to be vigilant after a pet was lured into an illegal fox-trap at a popular walking spot in Exeter.

Fortunately the dog escaped unharmed and the incident has been reported to the police.

The incident happened in Ludwell Valley Park, close to the Wendover Way entrance. The owner of the dog said her pet was lured into the wire snare that had been placed in a hedgerow, by a number of opened tins of dog meat. She had to crawl through undergrowth to set him free after she heard her pet crying for help.
