Two dogs have died and two people suffered the effects of breathing in smoke in a fire at a Devon home.
Two appliances from Okehampton were dispatched to Crediton Road in the town at 4.22am.
Firefighters used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and a safety jet to extinguish the fire. They also used a Positive Pressure Ventilation fan to clear the smoke that had filled the living areas and roof space of the property.
An ambulance was requested to treat two adults suffering smoke inhalation.
The two dogs were found dead and removed from the property by...
Lost or stray dogs will be reunited with their owners thanks to new microchipping laws which come into effect to improve dog welfare today.
Under the new measures all owners must ensure their dog is microchipped and their details are kept up to date. Not only will this mean the UK’s 8.5 million dogs can be returned to their owners more quickly if they wander too far from home, but it will also make it easier to track down the owners of dogs that carry out attacks on people.
Already over 86% of responsible dog owners have had their pets painlessly implanted with a microchip...
Support Adoption For Pets manager Amy Wilson has underlined the importance of making sure your dog is microchipped.
New legislation is set to commence from the 6th April 2016 making it a legal requirement for all dog owners to ensure their pets are microchipped, or could face a £500 fine and a criminal conviction.
Statistics show that around 1.8 million of our furry friends are still without a microchip making them untraceable if they are to go missing, and Amy has advised the public to take responsibility and adhere to the new law.
Dogs Trust Ilfracombe is appealing for homes for a litter of three sweet-enough-to eat puppies who were born totally deaf.
The adorable 10-week-old Collie puppies, two boys and one girl, have been named after popular chocolate bars Aero, Wispa and Kinder because they arrived at the rehoming centre just before Easter.
The cheeky bundles of fun found themselves at Dogs Trust as an unwanted litter, which staff suspect may be due to the fact that they suffer from congenital deafness. This condition is not uncommon in white dogs and, sadly, often results in many puppies such as...
A national dog rescue charity is inviting people to come forward and offer a new home to a dog so magical, they have nicknamed him ‘Harry Pawter’.
Finding Furever Homes, which cares for dogs from throughout the South West, is keen to find two year old lurcher Harry a deserving new home as soon as possible and is running an online social media campaign to find a home for Harry – preferably not under the stairs as his movie namesake was offered!
Andrea Newton, who co-founded the charity, said: “Harry really is a great dog. He has impeccable manners, walks beautifully on the...
The RSPCA is appealing for information after a young, female Staffordshire Bull Terrier type dog was left tied to a gate in a secluded spot on Old Tiverton Road in Bampton, Devon, last Thursday (10 December).
The small, mostly black and white dog, who is thought to be around two to three years old, was initially discovered by a member of the public at around 6am on the morning of 10 December.
Thinking the dog must belong to someone the person left the spot but when they returned later on at 11am, they were shocked to find her still sitting there tied to the gate and...
NFU Mutual, the UK’s leading rural insurer, is urging owners to put certain foods on the ‘naughty list’ for their dogs this year. Christmas is well known as a time of excess for humans but, according to the insurer, pet dogs are also prone to eating too much during the festive period and sometimes, what they choose to eat could have serious health implications and end-up in an emergency visit to the vet.
NFU Mutual warns that claims for dogs who have eaten weird or poisonous items take on a distinctly seasonal flavour as Christmas approaches and reflect the type of foods...
Dogs Trust Ilfracombe will be “chewning” into the airwaves on Bonfire Night to help petrified pooches conquer their fear of fireworks and are urging Devon dog owners and radio stations to do the same. A Dogs Trust survey of 3,750 pet owners shows that two-thirds of dogs are worried by fireworks and that 93% of their owners alter their routine during fireworks celebrations to try to minimise the trauma on their pets. Many dog owners are simply unaware of the effect that firework fear can have on their dogs and each year we receive calls from pet owners who simply don’t know how to calm...
Local enforcement teams and their sniffer dogs will take to the streets of Exeter on Monday (19 October) to ask for the public’s help in tackling the sellers of illegal tobacco.
Currently over 100,000 people in Devon smoke, and around 3% of these buy illegal tobacco. Illegal tobacco is known to make it easier for children to start smoking, as it is sold at cheap prices, and is also known to make communities more attractive to criminals, who can have links to organised crime.

Police in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset have been contacting local schools at the start of the new term, highlighting the need for dog safety.

As a result of this police, in partnership withthe RSPCA and the Dogs Trust, are contacting primary schools and offering safety advice.
