Job prospects in the South West are the best in the country, with an employment outlook of +15% this quarter, according to Manpower, the global leader in contingent and permanent recruitment workforce solutions. This is a significant increase on last quarter’s Outlook of +10%, and the highest in the region for over three years.

Record Rise of 2.58m in South West Employment Rate

The employment rate in the South West has increased by a record 2.58 million in three months, according to figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) this morning.

However while unemployment did fall in this three month period, the figures also show that 6,000 more people in the South West are now unemployed since last year meaning the the South West is the only region to record a rise in its unemployment during th whole year period.

Nationally the ONS figures show that the employment rate is now at 72.3%, the highest it has been since the recession began...

Unemployment rises in Devon

The number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) in Devon has risen for the first time since February 2013, with figures increasing by 66 claimants over the past month. Claimants in Devon have gone up from 6,513 in October to 6,579 in November meaning a 1% increase from last month.

The news comes the same day as the Office for National Statistics (ONS) report reveals that the overall national unemployment rate has fallen.

The ONS reports that nationally 250,000 more people are now in employment since July this year.

A female engineer from Italy has secured a job with design and engineering consultancy Atkins in Exeter after receiving advice from the National Careers Service.

Exeter apprenticeship allays fear of losing home for ex-King’s School student

A school leaver who was worried she would have to leave her home has now-started an apprenticeship that means she can stay put, thanks to a timely call from Careers South West.

Megan Foster is a care leaver living in a flat in the grounds of her previous foster parents’ home. In order to stay in this accommodation Megan is required to be either in full-time education, training or employment, a condition of the Staying Put Scheme that funds her housing.

Use of zero hours contracts unfair warns Exeter CAB

Local charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, says that the use of zero-hours contracts are hitting employees hard as they are unable to budget or plan long-term.

Zero-hours contracts mean zero responsibility for too many employers. The charity is seeing too many people who are denied work because they become pregnant or suffer an illness.

This type of contract can also mean fluctuating incomes that cause havoc with people’s benefit claims, denying them much-needed income when the hours dry up.
