Changes to management of city proposed

Changes look set to be made to the way Exeter manages its High Street and City Centre shops and businesses.

Plans have been announced to dissolve Exeter's City Centre Management Partnership and instead concentrate all efforts on creating a Business Improvement District.

Letters have been sent to all members of the Partnership proposing that it be dissolved on 28 November. Cllr Rosie Denham, Lead Councillor for Economy and Culture, said: "Devon County Council has ended its £20,000-a-year contribution to the Partnership. Funding has always been split between the two councils...

Warning to festive party bookers

People planning a Christmas party are being urged to look before they book ahead of this year’s festivities.

Exeter City Council working in partnership with the Food Standards Agency, is urging people to check the restaurant, pub or cafe’s food hygiene ratings before making a booking.

“It’s the things you can’t see – like germs spread by bad hygiene practices - that people need to consider. There’s one easy way to set your mind at rest – check the food hygiene rating,” said Cllr Keith Owen, Lead Councillor for Environment, Health and Wellbeing.

“It’s really easy to...

People are being asked to help shape Exeter City Council’s licensing policy for the future.

The Council is carrying out a consultation exercise and is asking people to comment on its draft licensing policy.

“At the heart of the draft policy is the City Council’s desire to promote a vibrant night time economy for Exeter, whilst minimizing the number of negatives,” said Cllr Keith Owen, Lead Councillor for Environment Health and Wellbeing.

“The night time economy would provide a rich mix of entertainment and activity which is welcoming, clean and safe. It would also...

City council explains letter to residents

People in Exeter may receive a letter over the next few days from the City Council referring to a Fair Processing Notice.

The letters have been sent to everyone who has received a payment from the city council over the last six years.

A city council spokesman said that the letters were nothing to worry about and did not need to be acted upon.

“Like all councils we must let people know when we are required by law to share their personal information with government organisations. In this case we are obliged to provide the Audit Commission with details of anyone listed...

Work starts on upgrading Devon County Show car parks

A major upgrade to the car parks at the Devon County Show is under way, following the situation at this year’s show, when heavy rain made the car parks unusable, so forcing the cancellation of the third day.

The work is being led and co-ordinated by the Devon County Agricultural Association and supported by the Environment Agency, Devon County Council, South West Highways and Mole Valley Farmers.

Geological surveys, subsoiling, infilling, levelling, harrowing and seeding have been carried out and the ground is already looking much better.

Devon County Council today came in for more criticism over its proposals to stop the treatment of weeds in Exeter.

Yesterday Exeter City Council's Leader Councillor Pete Edwards said the idea had come "out of the blue".

And this morning Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw added his clout to the argument.

He said: "The failure this year by Devon County Council to control Exeter's weeds has been bad enough but the proposal from them to do nothing at all next year beggars belief.

"Exeter City Council is facing equally serious budgetary constraints, yet it manages to do a...

Have your say on future of Exeter's budget

People are being asked to help shape the future for Exeter.

Exeter City Council has launched a major public consultation as it looks to save a further £4 million over the next three years.

The City Council’s grant from central government has already shrunk from £12 million in 2011-12 to £7.7 million in the current financial year. Now it is bracing itself for further reductions, to around £5 million, by 2017-18.

So far the...

Exeter City Council will be carrying out door-to-door enquiries this month as part of a new electoral registration system.

The remaining 20 per cent, were sent a form asking for further information. These may be people who have recently moved, or changed their name, for example.
