Humble fruit fly could help find brain tumour cure

The humble fruit fly is helping scientists who are working to find a cure for brain tumours.

And the tiny insect, often viewed as a household nuisance, has helped researchers to better understand mechanisms which turn a healthy cell into a tumour cell.

The work is taking place at the Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence at the University of Plymouth and is helping us get a better understanding of glioma tumours, which include low and high-grade types with glioblastoma (GBM) being the most commonly-diagnosed high-grade brain tumour in adults.

Aldi raises pay again to extend lead as best-paying supermarket in Devon

Aldi is raising pay for store colleagues for the second time this year, extending its position as Devon’s best-paying supermarket.

Aldi Store Assistants and Deputy Store Managers in Devon are set to receive a pay rise of 40p an hour from 1 June, as part of the supermarket’s announcement of its latest investment in its store colleagues across the UK.

The investment marks the supermarket’s latest commitment to its people, after becoming the first supermarket to pay Devon’s store and warehouse colleagues at least £12.00 an hour in February.

Girlguiding South West England visited one of its counties, Devon, on Friday 8 March as part of its region roadshow programme, inviting members from Girlguiding Devon along with stakeholders and organisations from across the county to celebrate International Women’s Day and to help launch their new resource, ‘Empower in a Box’.

Notable guests included the Lord Mayor of Exeter and his Consort, the Deputy Lieutenant of Devon, and President of Exeter Lions Club. Organisations such as the Salvation Army, Devon and Cornwall Police, and the National Trust also attended.

Local bus operator Stagecoach South West announced changes across their regional bus network. Bus timetables across Devon will see improvements to offer customers a more reliable and punctual service.

Tesco shoppers in Exeter have a golden hour this Saturday (16 March) to win a share of half a million pounds for their local school or a community group that supports children.

Resident, Alyson, at Cumberland Grange who has a huge love for animals, had a dream of seeing a parade of dogs. So staff were set upon the mission to make it happen and reached out to the local Pinhoe community and beyond to help.

West Exe School , part of the Ted Wragg Trust , recently hosted their first inter-school chess competition with 9 of the school’s Year 7 students who attend a lunchtime Chess Club taking on their counterparts from Matford Brook Academy [INSERT LINK].

There were a few nerves alongside a lot of excitement amongst the students who were proud to represent their schools. Both sets of students played some excellent chess over the course of the afternoon, with a lot of incredibly close games as students got to grips with the pressure of playing under timed conditions for the first time...
