Honiton RFC youth teams take on Chiefs

Youth teams at Honiton RFC were given a special treat this week when they were given the chance to practice their skills with some of Exeter Chief’s finest players in a special, one-off training session. The event was organised by Exeter-based Financial Claims Management Company EMCAS, active sponsors of both clubs, who saw an opportunity to give the Honiton youth teams a unique experience, as part of helping to inspire the next generation of professional players.

Over £150,000 to go to East Devon Commmunities

Communities around East Devon are about to see an extra cash injection after parish and town councils successfully bid for over £150,000 of fresh funding.

In total, £155,558 will be placed in the district’s ‘Parishes Together Fund’ after East Devon District Council and Devon County Council worked together to raise the sum equal to £1.10 per elector. Projects including the Ottery Food Bank, the Cranbrook Community fund, the Axminster mental health organisation known as ‘The Project’ as well as several primary schools in the area are among the projects to benefit from the funding....

Nature reserve will bear fruit

Volunteer nature lovers in Honiton came along on Thursday to help with the planting of new trees at EDDC’s Honiton Bottom community nature reserve.

Alex Gibson from the Council’s SWITCH project and Nathan Robinson from EDDC’s Countryside team were supervising the planting of fruit trees that will form a new orchard in the reserve to attract bees and butterflies, as well as wildlife.

There are also plans for a hay meadow with some wild flowers and a series of ponds. There may also be some beehives and hopefully a community garden.

Honiton Church to host charity Violin Recital

With spring finally pushing through the last remnants of winter, St Paul’s Church in Honiton is set to play host to a Spring Violin Recital on Wednesday 19 March at 7.30pm.

The event, sponsored by Gilbert Stephens Solicitors, will feature Devon violinist Marie Langrishe. Marie is 19 and lives near Honiton. She started learning the violin aged 7, and continued musical studies whilst studying at Maynard School in Exeter, where she led both the school orchestras and the school quartet for a number of years.

Police appeal after Honiton pub assualts

Police are appealing for witnesses following two assaults in a Honiton pub. Police would like to speak with anyone who was in the Three Tunns on Saturday night (8 February 2014.) A 46-year-old man suffered slight bruising to both eyes in an assault at around 11.30pm inside the pub. Two men, a 20-year-old and an 18-year-old, were later arrested on suspicion of assault. They remain on police bail while enquiries continue. A 45-year-old woman also suffered slight injury after she was assaulted. A35 Closed

A35 Devon -

The A35 is closed in both directions between the B3165 Crewkerne Road junction in Axminster and the A30 junction in Honiton, because of a fallen tree and fallen power cables.

It is currently unknown how long the road will be closed for.

Man with suspected spinal injuries after A303 crash

A man has been taken to Wonford hospital with suspected spinal injuries after his car overturned on the A303 near Honiton this morning. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 7am this morning (15 January) due to the accident involving two vehicles. Fire crews attended the accident and used hydraulic cutting gear to free the man, thought to be aged between 20-30, from a veichle on its side. A303 closed and slow traffic in both directions between the A30 junction in Upottery and Southfields Roundabout in Donyatt, because of Police accident investigation work.

£90,000 improvements at Honiton Skate-park

£90,000 is to be spent on improvements to the skate park in Honiton after young people in East Devon voted for the project.

113 young people in the area voted for the new design for their skate park at three voting events held by East Devon District Council (EDDC). They got to vote on which one of four designs they wanted installed, the winner with 88% of all votes was Option D, a design from 1Skateparks. EDDC will now work with 1Skateparks to get this design installed and opened by early summer 2014. The £90,000 has come from EDDC’s main budget and is being spent on Honiton skate...
