Motorists warned of challenging conditions

People are being urged to be aware of challenging conditions when travelling this morning as Devon County Council gritters and ploughs work continuously across the county.

Heavy snow has been reported on high ground in the west and north west of the county around Dartmoor.

Some of the heaviest snow is being reported on the A388 Milton Damerel to Frithelstock Stone, as well as the B3357 and B3212 routes up towards Princetown and the A386 Mary Tavy to Sourton Cross, but they are all passable with care. Gritters out on Devon's roads as snow and ice forecast

Gritters are out on Devon’s main salting routes this afternoon as temperatures are set to dip below zero later.

With freezing conditions forecast across the county, road surface temperatures are expected to plummet to as low as -3.3C in East Devon from early this evening, and icy patches may be a problem in areas of the county affected by water run-off following recent rainfall.

The County Council is advising people to take extreme care if travelling overnight and tomorrow morning, particularly on untreated roads.

ICE Awards celebrate young unsung heroes

The ICE Awards, Exeter, is now in its fourth year of celebrating the most Inspirational Children in Education.

Devon's winter preparations underway

More than 4,000 grit bins across Devon are currently being inspected and re-filled by Devon County Council in preparation for winter.

Although the Autumn sunshine has dominated the recent weather, the County Council is gearing up for the coming season as it has now started its winter service operations.

Awards for Devon engineering projects

Two Devon projects have been recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West.

The awards were presented at the ICE Annual Project of the Year Awards in Bristol.

The Community Award was presented to the Exe Estuary Trail project, a cycle and walking route that extends over 16 miles set within the beautiful and sensitive backdrop of the Exe Estuary, on Devon’s south coast. Weather warning of ice for parts of Devon

The Met Office has issued a weather warning as ice is expected to cause disruption to some parts of the region.

The warning is valid until 10am tomorrow (Tuesday) and motorists are warned to take extra care as driving conditions could be tricky.

The Exeter-based agency’s chief forecaster said: “Wintry showers look like lasting a few hours yet, as for example across parts of south west Wales at present, where inland areas are still seeing some snowfall.

Temperatures are set to turn cold again across the region this week, with snow showers forecast for some areas on Friday.

The Met Office five-day forecast is as follows:

Today: Cloud and rain will move southeast across the region, then clear through the first half of the morning. It will then be dry with sunny spells. It will feel cool in a northwesterly breeze. Maximum Temperature 10C.

Tonight: Becoming cloudier from the north and west during the evening, but some places continuing to see some clear spells leading to a chilly night with a local frost possible....

Snow and ice set to return this weekend

Sleet and snow is forecast for Devon as temperatures are set to drop below freezing this weekend and into next week.

A severe weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for tomorrow (Saturday), valid from 3am until lunchtime.

A forecaster at the Met Office said: “A band of rain, sleet and snow will spread east across the region on Saturday morning. 2cm-4cm of snow is likely to fall on high ground, chiefly over the moors, but there is a risk of some snow at lower levels.

Warning of risk of snow and ice on Devon's roads

People in Devon are being urged to take extra care when travelling later today and overnight, with widespread snow forecast.

Localised showers are expected to turn wintry from around 6pm tonight onwards, with The Met Office issuing a yellow alert for the risk of snow, particularly on higher ground and in the north of the county. However, snow may fall across any part of Devon.

Devon County Council, the Highways Agency, and Devon and Cornwall Police are advising motorists to check the weather forecast and road conditions before setting out.
