Road users are being warned that widespread ice could affect the county’s roads over the next three nights.
Freezing conditions are again forecast across the county and road surface temperatures are expected to plummet to as low -2C from tonight, Friday 5 January.
Devon County Council is advising people countywide to take extra care as icy patches may be a problem in areas of the county affected by water run-off, particularly on minor roads, following recent rainfall. The worst conditions will occur overnight and in remote areas such as the moors.
Devon’s gritters will be out in force this evening and overnight with the possibility of snow showers and icy conditions forecast.
There is a chance of up to 5cm of snow on higher ground, and the County Council’s 37 frontline gritters will be treating all of Devon’s main salting routes. In some cases they will be carrying out repeated treatments, some of them up to three times on routes covering Dartmoor and Exmoor, which will be salted at around 6pm, midnight and 5am. The South Devon Link Road project has won two awards at a major regional industry award ceremony, held on Friday 8 July.
The project was presented with the ‘South West Project over £1 million’ award and the ‘People’s Choice award’ at the Institution of Civil Engineering (ICE) South West annual awards.

A weather warning for ice has been issued for Devon by the Met Office.
Scattered showers are expected to move into the region later today, which could be heavy and wintery showers over high ground.
Clear spells between the showers will allow temperatures to fall below freezing tonight, leading to an increased risk of ice forming on untreated surfaces.
The warning is valid from 8pm tonight (Thursday) until 10am tomorrow.

Devon County Council's gritting teams are preparing for the coldest night of the season so far with the forecast of a countywide freeze overnight (TUESDAY JAN 19th).
Road surface temperatures are set to drop below freezing across Devon from early evening, with lows of -6.3C expected in East Devon.

Another weather warning has been put in place for Devon as temperatures continue to drop.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for ice from 9pm tonight through to 9am tomorrow (Tuesday 19 January).
A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “After a very wet morning some surfaces will remain wet due to run off and seepage on Monday night and Tuesday morning.
“With temperatures expected to fall close to or below freezing this is likely to lead to some icy patches forming.
“Please be aware that this may lead to some low level disruption to travel.”
