Fire Brigade says increase in handcuff incidents may be "Fifty Shades effect"

The London Fire Brigade said today that the number of incidents involving people being stuck or trapped in objects like handcuffs and toilet seats has risen over the last three years. The new figures have prompted calls from fire chiefs for people to think carefully before dialling 999.

The Brigade has attended over 1,300 incidents involving people being trapped or stuck, often in everyday household items, since 2010. The Brigade said that each incident costs taxpayers at least £290, meaning the incidents have cost at least £377,000.

One man dead in 'machete' attack in Woolwich

One man has been killed in a major incident in Woolwich in south-east London on Wednesday afternoon.

Although neither the police or the government has at this stage confirmed the attack as a terrorist incident, the Prime Minister, speaking from Paris said there is a "strong indication" that this was the case.

Initial reports suggest that the dead man, who was believed to be wearing a Help for Heroes t-shirt, is a serving soldier (as yet unconfirmed) from the nearby Woolwich Barracks.

This May Day (1 May) a badger flash-mob - led by Queen’s Brian May - will descend on the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), protesting the Conservative-led badger cull.

Brian May will front the flash-mob – dressed as a badger and with a black stripe in his hair – as they dance and call for the badger cull to be replaced by badger vaccination.

Victoria Station evacuated after train caught fire

London's Victoria Station was evacuated this morning (Thursday 17th January), at approximately 7am, due to a fire on a Gatwick Express train.

Eye witnesses reported being evacuated to outside of the station, having seen a Gatwick Express train on fire.

Smoke was seen pouring from the engine of a Gatwick Express train, forcing officials to evacuate and close Victoria Station.

Fire crews put out the blaze, which was spotted by a commuter at around 7am.

The train was empty at the time, National Rail said, and no one is reported to have been injured.
