Met Office

The sun is on its way so make the most of the day!

Make the most of today's weather because, for a change, it's going to be better than the rest of the week!

According to the Met Office, this morning's mist and cloud should clear through the morning. It will then be a largely dry and fine day with very warm, sunny spells and light winds and a maximum temperature of 26 °C.

Any isolated showers will clear quickly, to leave a mainly dry night with clear spells, which may allow some mist and fog patches to form. The minimum temperature will be 11 °C.

On Tuesday mist and fog patches will again clear leaving a mostly dry...

Thunderstorms may hit the South West as hot weather breaks

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning on Monday 22 July with thunderstorms anticipated in the South West in the next few days.

The recent prolonged spell of high pressure and heat is likely to give way to cloudier conditions with the risk of isolated thunderstorms or longer spells of thundery rain and some torrential downpours in places.

The Met Office said: "The public should be aware of the risk of localised disruption to travel, and more generally to summer holiday activities, due to (for example) surface water flooding.

"An area of low pressure is...

Met Office raises heatwave warning for South West to level 3

The Met Office has issued a revised heatwave warning for the South West, raising the level from two to three, meaning action is required.

Where a level two heat health grading should prompt an alert and readiness for action, a level three warning requires social and healthcare services to target specific actions at high-risk groups.

The Met Office forecasts a 90% probability of heatwave conditions on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 July in the region.

Temperatures in Exeter are expected to reach 26 or 27 degrees once again and other parts of the region may see the mercury...

Despite poor weather, Met Office solar PV has generated more than estimated in first year.

A year after a 250 kW solar PV array was installed at the Met Office HQ Exeter, and – despite some terrible weather over the past 12 months – the system has still out-performed initial estimations.

The sun may be in full view now (with the Met Office predicting below average rainfall and above average temperatures throughout July) but official statistics show that 2012 was one of the wettest years on record for the UK and June 2012 was the least sunny in records dating back to 1910....

Batten down the hatches as Met Office issues Amber warning for rain

The Met Office has issued an Amber warning for the South West, reporting that rain is expected to become heavy and prolonged tonight, persisting through much of Friday.

The Chief Forecaster reported that "Frontal bands pushing northeastwards during the latter part of Thursday and during Friday will find their progress slowed up by a blocking area of high pressure located northeast of the United Kingdom.

"This will result in the associated rain-bearing systems becoming slow-moving over southwestern parts of England and Wales leading to heavy and, at times, prolonged rainfall...
