More flood risk as heavy rain continues

Forecasters are warning that further heavy rain is due to hit Devon until late on Tuesday (28 January).

The Met Office warns that frequent showers, some heavy, will bring a further 10-15 mm of rainwater into the region with the risk of up to 40 mm of rain on some areas of high ground.

The rain brings the risk of even further flooding and travel disruption especially in areas where the ground is already saturated.

Heavy rain warning in Devon

Outbreaks of heavy rain spreading slowly eastwards across South West England are likely to hit Devon from 3pm this

later in the day before clearing away east in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Met Office has warned that with the ground remaining saturated, people should be aware of the risk of further localised flooding within the warning area.

The rain is also expected to lead to minor disruption to transport.

Heavy rain and strong gusts of wind forecast for this afternoon

A belt of heavy rain with strong gusts of wind is forecast for Exeter this afternoon.

The band of weather will arrive from midday onwards.

With the rain falling on already saturated ground and gusts of over 25 mph, motorists are being warned to take extra care.

An AA spokesman said: "Driving in wet conditions can be hazardous, but you have a better chance of staying safe if you prepare for wet weather.

"Even drivers with local knowledge can be caught out during heavy downpours, as even the most modern road surface is still susceptible to standing water....

Bad weather set to continue into next week

It would appear the bad weather is here to stay, with the Met Office issuing Yellow Weather Warnings of both rain and wind.

Today ( Monday 6th January) strongs winds of up to 60mph are due to hit the South West, with coastal areas being particularly affected.

The public are asked to take extra caution around coastal areas during these weather conditions.

People urged to protect their homes

People living close to the River Exe in Topsham and any other parts of Exeter that are at risk of flooding from tidal waters are being warned to protect their properties from an expected tidal surge tomorrow morning (Friday 3 January). The Environment Agency has issued severe flood warnings for coastal flooding for Friday morning. From around 6am and throughout the morning, waves are expected to reach up to 5m in height and combined with heavy rainfall and high winds, flooding may occur. The Met Office has warned of further heavy rain tomorrow morning after issuing a yellow weather warning. Forecasters have warned that further, heavy rain will return on Wednesday morning with up-to 60mph winds expected to accompany the rain. Sunny spells ahead as weather improves

The weather will finally begin to improve this afternoon after several days of severe gales and heavy rain.

Sunny spells and lighter winds are expected in Exeter this afternoon with a few light showers.

However the Met Office will maintain yellow weather warnings for the South West warning against further gales and heavy rain until late this evening.

The west coast could also see several heavy showers before the poor weather begins to clear by tomorrow.

Met Office issues weather warning

The Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning, indicating heavy rain in the South West today (Monday).

A Yellow Weather Warning indicates the public need to be aware of their weather conditions. Periods of rain, heavy at times, will affect parts of southern England later on today and more particularly on Monday 16th December.
