As temperatures start to fall PHE is urging people to think now how the onset of cooler weather could impact their health. Every year more than 25,000 extra people die in England over the winter period and many of these deaths are, experts say, preventable.

The Met Office warned that later this week we will get our first taste of cooler weather and temperatures are expected to fall to about what we’d expect for this time of year.

Mark Wilson, a meteorologist Met Office, said: "This week looks likely to see temperatures falling closer to the early December average. This...

A warm weekend on the way

It may be almost December but temperatures in the heart of Devon will match those in destinations such as Athens and Porto this weekend.

The Met Office is forecasting a mild few days ahead with temperatures up to 12C and possibly 13C in Exeter.

And the chances of a white Christmas are slim with above average temperatures expected through to February.

The Met Office forecast for the next five days is as follows:

Today:

Fairly cloudy and murky for many, with widespread hill fog and the odd spot of drizzle over higher ground. However, a better chance...

Planners approve supercomputer building

The outlook seems bright for East Devon with news that that a building to house a major part of the Met Office’s proposed new high performance computer was given the go-ahead from district council planners yesterday (Thursday 13 November).

The modern building will provide much of the space for the so-called supercomputer on a site at Exeter Science Park, whilst the rest of the equipment will be housed on the Met Office’s existing site at Sowton, Exeter.

News that planning permission has been granted by East Devon District Council – conditional on the new development meeting...

The weather may be relatively calm at the moment, but the Met Office have issued another yellow weather warning for rain tomorrow (Thursday) which is set to continue through Friday, into Saturday.

Forecasters say a developing frontal system is expected to bring another period of persistent rain, which will be heavy at times, to parts of the southern England later on Thursday and into Friday. The rain is likely to be accompanied by strong and gusty winds.

There is a risk of localised flooding, exacerbated by fallen leaves blocking drainage courses.

By taking simple steps, such as signing up to The Met Office's National Severe Weather Warning Service, members of the public can ensure they keep warm, healthy and safe this winter. The campaign will build on last year's initiative which saw thousands of people get the...

Devon buffeted by remnants of Gonzalo

Devon was today being buffeted by the former Hurricane Gonzalo.

Gale force winds and heavy rain are forecast throughout the day resulting in a yellow warning by the Met Office.

Drivers are being warned to take extra care due to the potential of fallen trees and debris on the road.

Winds in the north of the county are predicted to reach up to 27mph and 20mph in Exeter.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Fallen leaves impeding drainage increases the risk of surface water affecting roads, while some damage to trees is possible, given that many are still in full leaf...
