A miserable return to work for some

The wet and windy weather that has been ever-present this festive break will be back again just in time for some of us returning to work.

Those living or commuting near seafronts were warned to be extra careful as the stormy conditions will coincide with spring tides.

Are we heading for worst winter in 60 years?

Snow may fall on higher ground today but it will be a mere sprinkle compared to what some forecasters say is in store.

The Daily Express today warned its readers to prepare for '100 days of snow' with winter 2013/14 set to be the worst in more than 60 years.

The newspaper quoted Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, who said: “Early indications are that this winter is looking particularly severe, and we could see parallels with the shocking winter of 1947.

The outlook for Saturday and Sunday is unsettled with strong winds, possibly gale force and outbreaks of rain, heavy at times. It will be drier and brighter on Monday with some sunshine.

Meanwhile, after some of the coldest temperatures...

The Met Office says it has learnt valuable lessons and improved forecasting on the 25th anniversary of the Great Storm that wreaked havoc across Britain.

It left 18 people dead and caused morethan £1 billion of damage, sparking questions as to why there had been no warnings of what was to come.

Yet just hours before, BBC forecaster Michael Fish had said: "Earlier on today apparently a woman rang the BBC and said she had heard that there was a hurricane on the way.

"Well if you are watching, don't worry there isn't."
