Devon and Cornwall Police and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service have come together to issue a joint community message across our region encouraging those celebrating Guy Fawkes Night to remember that fireworks are explosives and should be respected.
Each year both services receive reports and are called out to deal with children and adults being injured by fireworks across our region. In a joint message from both Community Safety Teams they would like everyone to just stop and think for a moment before handling fireworks:
Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic incident yesterday [31 October] near to Buckland St Mary in Somerset, close to the Devon border.
The incident involving a van and a car happened shortly after 1pm on the A303.
The van, which was travelling in a north easterly direction, had just negotiated a sweeping right-hand bend when it crossed the centre of the road and was in collision with the Fiesta travelling in the opposite direction.

Crews have endured grueling and lengthy shifts as they attempt to bring the blaze under control.

Police are increasingly concerned for the welfare of 77-year-old Lesley Roger Irish, who has been missing from the Heavitree area of Exeter since Tuesday 25th October 2016.
He last made contact with his family on the evening of Monday 24th October. His disappearance is out of character.
Mr Irish is described as white, 5’ 5” tall and of very slight build. He has short thin grey hair, bald on top. He is likely to be wearing a coat, walking boots and rucksack.
He may be driving a 7-year-old red Mitsubishi Colt saloon with registration WG62 DWM.

Action has been taken against almost a dozen young motorists following a crackdown on antisocial driving at Exmouth seafront.
Exmouth Neighbourhood Policing Team carried out two operations over the summer to target young car enthusiasts who traditionally gather at the seafront.
The operation, run with the assistance of roads policing and response officers, was conducted in response to concerns from the public about speeding and dangerous driving.

Police are seeking witnesses to a robbery which occurred between 8am and 9am on Sunday 16th October 2016 in South Street in Exeter.
The victim was a 68-year-old woman from Newton Abbot.
Detective Sergeant David Lewandowski said: "The incident happened outside the Wetherspoons George’s Meeting House pub. The victim was approached by a man who at first made a grab for her dog, which was not harmed, and then snatched her white purse containing £15 in cash.

Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez and Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer, the National Police Chiefs' Council Lead on Modern Slavery, have welcomed today’s news that the Home Secretary is backing their bid for extra resources to tackle modern slavery. Amber Rudd has announced that the Government is giving an extra £8.5 million nationally to help police fight this crime. This new response, led by Devon and Cornwall, will provide over 50 dedicated analysts, specialists and investigators. Police were called following reports of the alarms going off at the Banburys Store in Gold Street, Tiverton, at around 4.15am today (18 October).
It appears that a saloon-type car was used to force the doors to gain access to the store. People wearing balaclavas managed to steal vast quantities of perfume before fleeing the area in the same vehicle up Bampton Street.
Police are appealing for witnesses and would also like to hear from anyone who has come across any discarded items in the area including perfume and balaclavas, or who have been offered any perfume for sale....
