The Recycled Candle Company prides itself on its green credentials – but one customer has taken things a step further!

Founders Richard Hills-Ingyon and Sargon Latchin recently received an email from Susan Morris from Surrey. Susan is a long-time fan of the eco-business which gives customers branded brown paper carrier bags for their purchases. Return to mender: BigFix 2020 saves £100K of broken items from the tip

Two thousand people across Devon and the UK visited their local repair café earlier this month to have a record 2,253 broken items fixed at the largest event of its kind ever held.

Coordinated by Devon County Council, the Big Fix 2020 saw 66 Repair Cafes across the UK run simultaneous events on Saturday February 15, with a single mission – to repair as much as possible.

Recycle Devon wants Devon residents to join the ‘Donation Generation’

Devon residents are being invited to join the Donation Generation by pledging to reuse and repair clothing as much as possible and reduce the estimated 10,000 items of clothing thrown away in the UK every five minutes.

Every pledge made will be entered in a prize draw on 2 March 2020, to win one of 10 Upcycling and Repair kits.

The kits consist of handy items to help repair and upcycle clothing easily such as fabric scissors, iron-on patches, repair tape, cottons, needles and buttons.

Disability charity CEDA goes green

Exeter based charity CEDA (Community, Equality, Disability Action) is the latest South West organisation launching a new ‘go green’ initiative, raising awareness of small changes that can be made to help protect our planet.

CEDA delivers education and social opportunities with disabled people and works with over 150 individuals each week. The charity employs 90 staff and volunteers each of whom are being encouraged to make small changes one step at a time.

Devon residents urged to repair, refurbish and reuse

Devon County Council is championing the very first REUSE week this coming May 16th-22nd.

Residents from all over Devon are being urged to repair, refurbish and reuse more.

REUSE week is all about giving the things we own a new lease of life – by repairing, refurbishing, repurposing or passing them on to someone. It’s also about highlighting the treasure trove that is second-hand and pre-loved items.

One of the highlights of the week will be the UK premiere of the documentary REUSE! in conjunction with Transition Exeter.

Give and Take your Christmas gifts!

Devon residents planning a post Christmas clear-out are being urged to donate unwanted items at a ‘Give and Take’ event on January 21 or organise an event of their own.

Give and Take Days enable people to pass on things they no longer need - and the chance to pick up something they do for free.

There is usually a set ‘giving’ time, before the ‘taking’ begins.

The next event is at the Coaver Club, County Hall, Exeter on Thursday January 21, and it is organised by Recycle Devon.

Devon launches new reuse scheme

Devon County Council has signed up to a new reuse system that will enable them to use surplus resources such as office furniture and equipment more efficiently and track the significant savings on avoided purchasing and waste disposal costs.

The County Council is implementing a new web based system called WARPit which allows organisations to redistribute (give, loan or share) resources (such as tables & chairs) legally and conveniently within their own organisation and with agreed partners.

Doors open at re-use shop at Exton Road Recycling Centre

Exeter residents who want to look after their pennies and help save the environment can now take advantage of a new reuse shop at the Exton Road Recycling Centre.

In a joint initiative between Devon County Council and SITA UK the shop will provide a wide range of items including furniture, ornaments, clothing, golf clubs, bathroom fixtures and fittings and crockery.

Brewin Dolphin launch Charity of the Year at Sandy Park

Investment management company, Brewin Dolphin, based in Pynes Hill, Exeter, organised a special visit for students from the Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education to visit Sandy Park as part of their player sponsorship.
