Schools urged to donate books to Africa

Schools in the South West are being invited to donate books to schools in rural parts of South Africa, as part of a competition to learn about farming in the country.

The 2015 Help a South African School competition asks children in years one through to 11 to learn about fruit farming and the difference it makes to the lives of families in South Africa, and to produce a collage of their learnings.

There are two top prizes of £1,000 for winning schools in two school year categories to spend on resources; there are also prizes for two second and two third placed schools....

Record numbers of pupils to attend Waste Summit

A record number of Devon students are expected at this year’s Waste Summit, which takes place later this month.

Around 100 pupils from eight secondary schools are due to attend the 13th annual Waste Summit which will be held at County Hall on Thursday 26 March.

This free event is part of Devon County Council’s waste education programme and is aimed at Devon’s Secondary Schools to increase students’ awareness of the impacts of wasting resources. This year’s summit will explore everything from materials for mobile phones and the role of energy from waste plants.

Theatre group bring safety messages alive

Devon and Cornwall Police and Devon County Council have joined forces with the Solomon Theatre Company to deliver safety workshops to teenagers about rape and child sexual exploitation.

National theatre group Solomon having been visiting schools across Devon and Cornwall throughout February and March using their drama ‘Last Orders’ to bring personal safety issues to life.

The hard-hitting scenarios are based on true stories such as teenagers binge drinking and being caught up in unhealthy relationships and exploitation, both on online and in person.

Cash boost for young entrepreneurs

Devon County Council has awarded £113,000 worth of funding to Schools across Devon through its Enterprise in Schools Grant programme to help encourage entrepreneurship.

The programme is designed to help Devon’s schools create or expand educational opportunities within the areas of enterprise and innovation for both pupils and staff, and is informed by the ‘Enterprise for All’ report.

It will enable schools to provide a better balance between education and skills for employment and aims to equip young people with the motivation and confidence to work for themselves.

Four Devon primary schools, including one in Exeter, have been chosen to take part in a national initiative aimed at developing global education.

Redhills primary and pre-school in Exeter, Lady Modiford’s in Walkhampton and Meavy and Offwell schools have been selected to develop international links with Tanzania as part of a major new school twinning project.

Some schools will have to fund their own crossing patrols

Devon schools that don't meet strict criteria will be asked to fund their nearby crossing patrols, it was decided this afternoon.

The county council is facing a £50 million reduction in its funding in the next financial year and, as part of that, is to reduce its school crossing patrol budget by around £100,000 per year in the next two financial years.

Ofsted success for village primary school

A Mid Devon village school has been praised by education inspectors for making learning enjoyable and achieving above average standards.

They have rated Rackenford primary as a good school across the board.

They say the quality of teaching and the achievement of pupils is good, as is the behaviour and safety of the children and the leadership and management.

Pupils say the school is ‘brilliant’ because the teachers make it fun to learn, report the inspectors from the school standards agency Ofsted.
