Three years ago, Exeter Leukaemia Fund was one of the first charities to join forces with Giveacar, which was a new non-profit social enterprise that encourages car owners to scrap or sell their old unwanted cars in a professional manner, giving the proceeds to the charity of their choice. From small beginnings like ELF, Giveacar has grown from dealing with 7 cars per month to 50 per week. Carsharedevon.com campaign attracts new members

Carsharedevon.com is moving ever closer to reaching the milestone of 10,000 members following its latest drive to get more people to cut costs and carbon emissions by sharing their car journeys.

More than 400 motorists signed up as part of the scheme’s recent ‘Win a Tank of Fuel’ campaign, taking the total membership to 9,900. The lucky winner of the fuel was Chris Howard from Starcross.

Spitfires ready for return to action

The Exeter Spitfires play their fifth game of the season and second home game this Sunday 16 June as they face the Bristol Bats for the third game in a row.

It has been a busy few weeks, which started with a fantastic 19-18 victory over the Bats in the Spitfires' first game at their new home, Chadwick Field at St Luke's Sports College.

The club then travelled to Bristol the following week, this time suffering a 24-13 loss. Both games showed further improvement from Exeter as their inexperienced roster continue to learn the game.

Number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance in Devon falls for third consecutive month

Devon County Council have announced that the number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) in Devon has fallen for the third consecutive month in line with the usual trend seen at this time of the year.

The claimant count across the county was down by 512 from 8,849 in April to 8,337 in May.

Even though the Devon figures reflect the national trend, the month-on-month decrease of 5.8% has occurred at a faster rate in Devon compared to the UK (2.8%).

A new perspective on art that touches all the senses

Exeter School is to exhibit artwork produced by WESC Foundation pupils and students for the second year running. An exhibition of sensory artwork produced by visually impaired artists will be held from 18-21 June, 10am – 3pm, in the Andrews Hall to which all are invited, beginning with a private view on Monday 17 June from 6-7.30pm. Exeter YMCA Dartmoor Walk raises over £2,500

Exeter YMCA saw fantastic success for their annual ‘Y-Walk’ event on Saturday 1 June, as a group of more than 40 trekked 11 miles from Okehampton Camp to Postbridge. The participants raised a fantastic £2,590, which will help further the YMCA’s work of providing accommodation and support to homeless young people.

As the summer approaches, people of all ages have the chance to find out what Exeter College offers them.

The Higher Education and Adult Learning Fair, at Hele Road 4 July, 5-8pm, is the ideal opportunity for people 19 and over to find out about learning new skills, meeting new people and gaining new qualifications, as well as finding out about the university-level courses at the college. Shrinking pay sees £5.7bn lost from South West economy

The value of the South West’s overall pay packet has fallen by 10% since 2007, according to a TUC analysis published today (Tuesday) to launch its new pay campaign: Britain Needs A Pay Rise. The TUC analysis of official figures shows that on the eve of the recession in 2007 workers across the South West were earning a total of £57bn (in 2012 prices).
