Cyclists raise over £2,000 for dementia

Gina Awad, Project Lead of the Exeter Dementia Action Alliance, and 40 staff including seven GPs from St Thomas Health Centre, spent their Saturday morning cycling from Exeter to Exmouth and back again all in aid of raising funds for dementia.

They were inspired following a Dementia Friends information session delivered by Gina, who also volunteers as a Dementia Friends Champion in Exeter, and arranged this event to support her fundraising. Together they have raised approximately £2,300.

Exeter's new photography studio is launching a calendar with a difference.

This will not be a selection of saucy kiss me quick poses, rather a celebration of everything that is good about Exeter, and in particular those people that are the lifeblood of the community, the carers, the volunteers, the school dinner lady.

There's one in every road, and without them most of what we take for granted wouldn't exist - or function half as well.

St Thomas Library are holding a Local History Day on Wednesday 21 January from 11am-4pm.

Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership and First Great Western are working together to improve Exeter St Thomas station and are looking for local residents to join in this improvement drive.

The Friends of Exeter St Thomas Station will help plan murals for the station platform walls and some greenery on the platforms and get involved in planting and watering.

Cadet Adam Brooks, 16, from 2469 (Exeter St Thomas) Squadron, Air Training Corps, recently competed in the South West region Swimming Championships, winning a gold medal for coming first in the 100m individual medley.

Not content with his gold medal, he also won a silver medal in the 50m butterfly as well a bronze medals as a member of both the 4x50m medley relay team and the 4x50m freestyle relay team.

St Thomas Gospel Choir have won a national award for "Contribution to the UK Gospel Music Industry" in the choir catagory of the PraiseTek Gospel Music Awards 2014. Each year, these awards acknowledge the work of various singers, musicians, choirs, rappers, bands and media personnel working in the UK gospel music scene.

Choir director, Kathy Rufolo and her fiance, Dale Hurrell, who sings bass in the group, went to London to receive the award on behalf of the choir with nearly 50 members.

Devon & Cornwall ASBO for 3 London men

Three men from London have been given ASBOs preventing them from entering Devon or Cornwall. On the 7 October Devon and Cornwall Police were successful in obtaining ASBOs against the three individuals. They are Youseff Addow aged 28 years, Deeq Juni aged 33 years, and Issa Juni aged 25 years (all pictured).

The ASBO secured prevents the three men from entering the Counties of Devon and Cornwall for the next five years.

Exeter streetlights to switch off this week

Around 1,200 streetlights in residential streets in St Thomas and Exwick will be converted to part-night lighting this week (Thursday 8 May). Streetlights previously on all-night will be switched off from about 12:30am to 5:30am, before coming on again until dawn. The change is the latest phase of Devon County Council’s controversial programme to reduce costs and carbon emissions, having already converted over 44,000 residential street lights across the county. Award materializes for young monster artist

Pandora Munoz has won first prize in a design a Doctor Who monster competition run by St Thomas Library.

The library, situated in Church road, Exeter, hosted an award event presenting Pandora with an upgraded version of the design she created.

The monster was redrawn and coloured by Simon Brett a local artist who works for the longest running scifi magazine in the world, Starburst. He presented Pandora with a framed original of her creature: ‘The Soul Stealer’.
