Work to start on A361 bridge repairs

Essential bridge refurbishment is due to start on the A361 on Monday 28 September and is expected to take around four months.

Devon County Council will be replacing the failed expansion joint on the River Exe Viaduct, west of Bolham Roundabout in Tiverton, while also waterproofing the bridge deck, which is required every 25 to 30 years. Work is expected to be completed by January 2016.

Since November 2014, a temporary cover plate has been in place on the expansion joint and speed restrictions have been imposed to help prevent further damage to the structure.

Unexpected guests drop in on radio star

BBC Radio Devon breakfast show presenter Simon Bates had some unexpected guests drop in (literally) yesterday.

The broadcaster, who lives near Tiverton, told his listeners he was "preparing for a bath and in his Marks & Spencer dressing gown" when there was a knock on the door.

He was surprised to see a stranger - and a hot air balloon, in his "back yard".

The drama was soon over however.

Former Radio 1 DJ Mr Bates said the balloon was packed away and removed within 20 minutes and he was offered a bottle of whisky as a thank you.

Outstanding GCSE results at Blundell’s School

Blundell’s School is thrilled with the excellent provisional GCSE results achieved by their Year 11 students. In a year group of 101, there was a 30% increase on last year in the number of A* grades, with an A* rate of 26%. More than half the year group gained the highest grades with an impressive A*/A score of 54% and nearly 40% of the year group gained 8 A*/A or more.

Tributes for motorcyclist killed in A38 crash

A motorcyclist who died following a collision on the A38 near Tiverton on Monday 27 July has been named as 23-year-old Anthony Roberts, from Witheridge.

Emergency services were called at 8.30am following the collision between a Honda motorcycle and a fuel tanker near Burlescombe. A third vehicle was also involved in the collision.

Anthony’s mother paid tribute to him: “My son has always loved life and lived it to the max. He has always been into motorbikes from a very early age and loved to ride his bike at every opportunity.

Motorcyclist dies following A38 crash

A motorcyclist has died following a collision on the A38 at Tiverton this morning (Monday 27 July).

Emergency services were called at 8.30am following the collision between the Honda CBR 125 motorcycle and a fuel tanker near Burlescombe. A third vehicle, a white Citroen C2, was also involved in the collision.

The motorcyclist, a man 23 year old man from the Tiverton area, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Next of kin have been informed.

Serious collision closes A38

Emergency services are currently at the scene of a serious collision on the A38 at Tiverton.

The collision, involving a motorcycle, an HGV and a car, happened at 8.30am near Burlescombe.

The male motorcyclist has sustained serious injuries.

Police, fire and ambulance are on scene.

The A38 has been closed at Waterloo Cross and Maidenhead Cross.

Diversions are in place and police are advising motorists to avoid the area for the time being.

Crow stuck between solar panels rescued

A crow had to be freed by fire crews after getting its head stuck between solar panels in Tiverton this morning (Saturday 25 July).

The crow had become trapped, by its head, between two solar panels on the roof of a two storey house in Palmerston Park.

A fire appliance from Tiverton was mobilised following a request from an RSPCA warden who was in attendance at the property.

Firefighters rescued the cow using a ladder, a roof ladder and safe working at heights equipment.

Duty of care was left with the RSPCA warden.

Country parks receive Green Flag Awards

The Grand Western Canal Country Park and Stover County Park have today (Thursday 23 July) been named among the best green spaces in the UK.

The parks, which are both managed by the County Council, are among a record-breaking 1,582 parks and green spaces across the country, and 90 in the South West, to be presented with the Green Flag Award.

Safe stolen from Tiverton building society

Police in Tiverton need the public’s help to identify two men they would like to speak to in connection with commercial burglaries in the town.

Two businesses on Angel Hill were broken into in the early hours of Monday 15 June, sometime before 8am.

The offenders are believed to have entered the premises by forcing their way in through the side doors.

A large grey safe, with a black handle on the front, was removed by the offenders from inside the Yorkshire Building Society.

A young transgender man is hoping to dispel often widespread misunderstanding about transgender culture with an event he is hosting in Devon.

Kay Browning from Tiverton wants others like himself and those questioning their gender identity to be accepted for who they are.
