The value of the South West’s overall pay packet has fallen by 10% since 2007, according to a TUC analysis published today (Tuesday) to launch its new pay campaign: Britain Needs A Pay Rise. The TUC analysis of official figures shows that on the eve of the recession in 2007 workers across the South West were earning a total of £57bn (in 2012 prices). This included higher levels of physical and verbal abuse from managers and colleagues, but also from customers and clients they came into contact with.
Devon County Council is calling on small and medium-sized businesses to think about the benefits of offering an apprenticeship.
The Council is organising a special event at Sandy Park in Exeter on Tuesday 12 March to bring young people and potential employers together.
Businesses are being encouraged to sign up to the event to see how they could get involved and maybe find a suitable apprentice for their organisation.
The day starts with a Business Breakfast between 8:00 and 9:00 am for those considering taking on apprentices to find out more information.
New figures reveal there were 7,830 Apprenticeship starts in Devon during the academic year 2011/12 – representing growth of 13.5 per cent from the previous year. Indeed, Devon registered the highest number of Apprenticeship starts in the South West region, with starts in the county accounting for 14 per cent of the 55,950 total.
There is a similar positive picture across the country, with Apprenticeship starts in England for 2011/12 topping the half million mark. This is an overall increase of 13.9 per cent on the preceding year.
More than a million better-off families will lose some or all of their child benefit, under changes which came into force at midnight. Families with one parent earning more than £50,000 lose part of their child benefit and it will be fully withdrawn where one parent earns above £60,000. However, if both parents earn £49,000 each, they will continue to receive child benefit.
David Cameron described the move as "fundamentally fair" but Labour said it was a "huge assault" on families.
Police officers from around the county have been awarded for their individual acts of bravery and for displaying exemplary acts of frontline policing.

Supt Eastwood said, “These awards recognise the excellent work that goes on, both on the frontline and behind the scenes, to keep the areas of Exeter, East and Mid Devon safe. I am proud to be the commander of such a professional and hard working team of officers”.
