Advanced works for phase two of the Axminster Millbrook Flood Defence Scheme have started today (Monday 19 September).

The preliminary work includes channel widening downstream of the railway and the installation of a "tree-catcher" debris grill upstream of the culvert beneath Willhaye Lane.

The second phase of Devon County Council's £540,000 scheme involves extending and increasing the size of the existing Willhaye Lane culvert to increase its capacity and allow greater flows to be conveyed to the main River Axe. These works have been designed to link up with the existing...

Friday is Bring Your Dog to Work Day

Friday (24 June) is national Bring Your Dog To Work Day - and Britain’s favourite day at the office is raising an interesting question: do dogs belong in the workplace?

Businesses from across the UK will welcome their dog loving employees into the workplace along with their loyal (and well-behaved!) four-legged companions. The day aims to raise money for All Dogs Matter, a charity which rehomes hundreds of dogs every year in London and Norfolk, while promoting the benefits man’s best friend in the workplace.

This year’s event has already seen a number of different...

National Park team make repairs to medieval settlement

Dartmoor National Park Conservation Works Team has been busy this week, working with archaeologists to make repairs to the nationally important medieval settlement at Hound Tor.

Repairs are needed periodically to replace stones which have been dislodged by cattle rubbing, erosion or human interference. The work involves identifying where stones originated in the walls of the buildings and repositioning them in their original locations – occasionally using discrete amounts of glue to ensure the stones remain in place.

Andy Crabb, Archaeologist for Dartmoor National Park said...

Overnight temporary lights on Bridge Road

Temporary traffic lights will be introduced overnight on Bridge Road in Exeter on Thursday 28 April.

From 11pm on Thursday until 5am on Friday morning, traffic lights will be in place on a short length of the road over Countess Wear Bridge.

This will provide the contractor with temporary working space to access the upstream wall of Countess Wear Bridge with a “cherrypicker”, allowing an Ecologist to install bat roost exclusion measures.

Bats are roosting in areas of the bridge masonry which would be disturbed by the proposed construction of the new cantilever bridge...

To coincide with the fly-through footage of Bridge Road in Exeter, Devon County Council takes a look back at how the route has developed over the years.

The widening improvements are the latest chapter in the history of this busy commuter route into the city.

The road and structures along the route have evolved to cope with changes in demand, and increasing traffic levels.

Across the county, Devon County Council maintains over 3,000 bridges. More than 50 of these are along the course of the River Exe alone and some of the key crossings are on Bridge Road. With so...
