Student case numbers down ‘but we must not be complacent’

Dr Virginia Pearson, Director of Public Health for Devon has today welcomed the continued reduction in student cases in Exeter but warns of the need for extra vigilance across the City and the rest of Devon as wider community cases rise.

“The pattern in Exeter has shown a successful reduction in student cases with no sign of significant spread thanks to the swift actions of the University and other partners in working together to contain the situation. But we must not be complacent,” she says.

“We are now seeing more community cases in Exeter and across Devon, in line...

Councillors support making some active travel measures permanent

Councillors have supported proposals for a number of “pop-up” measures to support walking and cycling in Exeter to be made permanent, and to carry out public consultation on some of the other arrangements in the city.

Devon County Council introduced a series of temporary measures in the city and other parts of the county in June, using a £338,000 allocation from the government’s Emergency Active Travel Fund. Social distancing requirements have reduced public transport capacity and the changes mirror the County Council’s proposed strategic cycle routes, providing safer routes for...

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Exeter City Council and Devon County Council supported by the 6th Battalion of the Rifles, made the hard decision not to conduct a live public service in the City for the safety of all those that would attend.

This will be the first time that the City Service, which usually takes place at Northernhay Gardens and the County Service, usually held on Cathedral Green, are coming...

The team at Guardian Homecare, which looks after people at home in Exeter, says men are urgently needed in the sector.

Manager, Catherine Porter says: “I believe that lots of kind and caring men may overlook working in care when they seek a job because they believe it’s an industry for women only.

“But our male carers say it is an extremely fulfilling. It enables them to make a real...

Dining domes set to offer eating experience in Exeter

Striking dining domes have started to appear outside a number of city centre restaurants, giving people a chance to eat out in their own socially-distanced bubble.

Exeter City Council is part-funding the seven domes, which are heated and seat up to eight guests around a table. New government restrictions allow groups of more than six to socialise only when they are from the same household or support bubble.

The idea of the domes came out of the Visitor Economy Recovery Group, which looks to support the hospitality, cultural and heritage sector which has been greatly hit...

Devon is at 'medium' alert level. What does that mean?

So what does the Government's three-tiered system of local COVID Alert Levels in England mean for Devon?

Dr Virginia Pearson, Director of Public Health Devon, explains: "Like most counties, Devon is currently assigned to be in the 'medium' alert level. There is no 'low' tier, so 'medium' is the lowest of the Prime Minister's three alert levels, which are currently being debated in Parliament before likely adoption on Wednesday.

"Most immediately, it means that we stay on track with the national and local measures that we have already got in place.

"From the...
