Exeter Diabetes Professor wins Belgian’s top scientific prize from country’s queen

Andrew Hattersley, Professor of Molecular Medicine at the University of Exeter and diabetes consultant at the Royal Devon & Exeter NS Foundation Trust, has won the Baillet Latour Health Prize 2020. The award will be presented by the Queen of Belgium on Tuesday.

Professor Hattersley was awarded the prize for his fundamental discoveries about diabetes that have changed the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of the genetic forms of this disease. The virtual award ceremony can be viewed via a live broadcast at 9.30am UK time on Tuesday December 1 .

Residents and staff at RMBI Care Co. Home Cadogan Court in Exeter supported Movember this week to raise awareness of men’s health issues.

Ladies and gentlemen at the Home, some in their 90s, had a giggle donning fake moustaches to pose for photos, and enjoyed an afternoon tea.

Movember, the month formerly known as November, is when brave and selfless men around the world grow a moustache and women step up to support them, all to raise awareness and funds for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and male suicide.

Exeter researchers are seeking local volunteers to take part in the world’s most detailed study into the onset and development of Alzheimer’s disease.

The Deep and Frequent Phenotyping (DFP) study aims to tackle the challenge of diagnosing and tracking Alzheimer’s disease in its earliest stages – often decades before symptoms start to show.
