Boost to Enterprise Zone is cleared for take off

A green light for four new projects in the Exeter and East Devon Enterprise Zone will see an increase in the delivery of employment space and unlock new jobs for the area.

An £8m fund was agreed by East Devon District Council’s April Cabinet to enable delivery of key projects. Subject to final approval being given at East Devon’s Full Council, these projects can then move forward in conjunction with partners at Devon County Council and Exeter Airport. Exmouth’s own local hero, Victoria Cross* (VC) recipient Lieutenant Richard Sandford, is to be honoured with a special memorial flagstone, which will be laid during a VC dedication service at the Strand Gardens, Exmouth on Sunday 22 April 2018 – almost 100 years to the day that he carried out the mission that led to his award.

New regional agency will reduce waiting times for children awaiting adoption

Local authority adoption services in Devon, Plymouth, Torbay and Somerset are joining forces to become a single regional adoption service, under the banner Adopt South West.

The move, required by the Government, is expected to improve the adoption process; making it simpler for adoptive parents, and quicker so children awaiting adoption are waiting less time.

Exeter professor honoured by Chinese university

A leading Exeter academic has been appointed as Honorary Professor at Tianjin University in China.

Professor Timothy Quine, Professor of Earth Surface Sciences and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) at the University of Exeter, was appointed alongside six other leading scientists at a ceremony on 27 March 2018.

They were all nominated by the Institute of Surface-Earth System Science (ISESS).

£2m funding boost for rural communities to restore historic buildings

A new grant scheme is being piloted this year in five National Parks, offering funding for land managers to restore their historic farm buildings.

The Historic Building Restoration Grant is being piloted in Dartmoor, Lake District, Northumberland, Peak District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks with £2 million of funding available.

Tithebarn Link Road open to traffic

A new route linking Exeter with developments to the east of the city has been completed and has opened to traffic.

The Tithebarn Link Road provides an alternative route avoiding M5 Junction 29, connecting the city and the Exeter and East Devon Growth Point, including the developments of Cranbrook, Skypark and the Exeter Science Park.

The route includes a 60 metre span pedestrian and cycle bridge alongside the existing bridge just north of Junction 29 of the M5. The bridge opened for use in February.
