Choir returns to its roots for first concert of the new season

Exeter Philharmonic Choir will begin its new concert season in November with Handel’s wonderful Messiah, the first work it performed in public in 1847, a year after the Choir was founded.

Handel composed his Messiah during 24 days of concentrated creativity in 1741. Since Exeter Philharmonic Choir’s first performance of this dramatic work, the Choir has returned to it many times - to the delight of members and audiences alike.

Exeter Philharmonic Choir is joined by four outstanding professional soloists and the superb musicians of The Handel Sinfony for this performance of Handel's Messiah.

Call to avoid Wildlife Refuges as flocks of overwintering birds return to the Exe Estuary

Flocks of visitors will soon be joined by flocks of birds enjoying the water and riverbanks of the Exe Estuary.

This annual event means that from 15 September to 31 December, the Exmouth Wildlife Refuge becomes active, marked with signage and yellow “WR” buoys. The Dawlish Warren Refuge is active all year round. South East Devon Wildlife ask everyone to avoid these refuges from land and water to give birds the space they need to survive.

Beachgoers can get free legal advice by the ocean this summer thanks to the University of Exeter and local solicitors.

The University’s Law School Community Law Clinic already helps people with issues ranging from housing, employment and immigration.

Now the clinic is decamping to Teignmouth and Exmouth to run pro-bono sessions near the beach next month. People can get confidential advice on a range of issues and information about the next steps they should take.

Courtlands Boardwalk re-opens on Exe Estuary Trail

Courtlands Boardwalk on the Exe Estuary Trail has re-opened following the completion of repairs.

The section of the Trail between Lympstone and Exmouth has been undergoing a major overhaul after it was found that timber structural beams and deck planks had deteriorated and become unsafe.

Over 94 tonnes of timber have been removed during the repair scheme, and it has been replaced with 70 new spans of a more durable fibre-reinforced material, known as Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP).

Exeter local Katie Derrick and her team at Right at Home Exeter & Exmouth embarked on a hair-raising charity skydive last week to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society.

Katie, 34 who is Manager of the Devon homecare provider was joined by CareGiver Belinda Blackwell (60), along with Katie’s mum Anne Charles (60) for the skydive, which took place at Dunkeswell Aerodrome in Honiton.
