The Luna Cinema is coming to Devon this summer, turning the grounds of Powderham Castle into an outdoor cinema.

From May to October, the two screens will tour across England to the Isle of Wight, and to Scotland and Wales, showing films in some of the UK’s most iconic venues.

Powderham Castle will play host to three screenings from 28-30 August, offering an audience of up to 1,500 the chance to watch Dirty Dancing (1987), Mamma Mia! (2008), or Top Gun (1986) under the stars.

Now in its seventh season, the company has expanded its reach to 120 screenings (up from 70 last summer) and will for the first time put on a truly nationwide programme, with locations this year ranging from stately country homes to botanical gardens to 10th century castles, in addition to more urban settings such as the rooftop of London’s One New Change in the heart of The City.

As always, Luna audiences are welcome to bring along picnics and drinks to screenings. However, all events will also have hot food for sale and a full bar on site. In addition, this season many events will have the option of a pre-film three course dining experience that can be booked in advance.

Premium tickets are available at all screenings, which as standard include a seat (in prime position in the arena), a drink at the Luna Bar and a gift bag supplied by DoubleTree by Hilton.

George Wood, founder of The Luna Cinema, said: “When I produced my first open air cinema screening in 2008 in Dulwich Park, I had no inkling that open air cinema would ever become so popular in Britain.  People told me I must be bonkers for investing in an outdoor screen given the unreliability of our weather! Seven years and thousands of screenings later, any doubts have long since evaporated. The British public have proven that they’re more than willing to brave the elements to enjoy a much-loved film under the stars.”

Headline partner DoubleTree by Hilton will be supporting the season, offering audiences prizes and experiences redeemable on site and at its more than 400 hotels across the globe.

Screenigs at Powderham Castle are as follows:

  • Friday 28 August: Dirty Dancing (1987)
  • Saurday 29 August: Mamma Mia! (2008)
  • Sunday 30 August: Top Gun (1986)
