Choir going La La for new East Devon Day Hospice
An evening of song and laughter will take place in Exmouth later this month, when more than 70 choir members take to the stage in aid of Hospiscare’s East Devon Day Hospice Appeal.
The La La Choirs and Budleigh Salterton’s Ukulele Strumming Club will come together to provide the music at the fundraising concert being held on Saturday 22 February at Exmouth Community College.
Local charity Hospiscare announced its plan to open a new day hospice for the East Devon community in 2013, later launching its appeal to raise the £250k still needed to complete and run the facility.
Samantha Abrahams launched the La La choirs in Lympstone in 2007 starting with a few friends as members.
The singing group, who perform anything from hip-hop to Jazz numbers in three and four part harmonies, now has more than 250 members making up five choirs.
Samantha said: “The ethos of the choir is simple – if you like singing and enjoy having a laugh then this choir is for you.
“Singing makes you feel good. It lifts your spirits and chases the stress away. La La is informal and fun - who doesn’t love to laugh and sing?”
Hospiscare provides high-quality, free of charge care to people with life-limiting illnesses in Exeter, mid and east Devon.
Having seen for herself the support and care Hospiscare gives to its patients and their families, Samantha was keen to get involved with the appeal and show her support by organising the concert.
Samantha said: “I have seen first-hand the work Hospiscare does - the support they provide to patients and their families is invaluable.
“At some of the darkest moments in a family’s life, Hospiscare try to give you a little warmth and comfort to make it bearable.”
The evening of music will appeal to all musical tastes, incorporating different genres and styles ranging from Russian poems to chart hits.
Sam said: “The evening will be a lively one - lots of foot tapping, maybe even some dancing in the aisles.
“You’ll hear wonderful music and you’ll see wonderful people singing their heads off and smiling ear to ear. It promises to be a very entertaining night that will leave you bouncing your way home.”
Hospiscare Appeal Fundraiser Sarah Smith said: “We’re delighted that the La La Choirs are putting on such an uplifting event to raise money for the appeal.
“We’re so grateful for their support and I can’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate the new day hospice and the benefits it will bring to the many Hospiscare patients living with a terminal diagnosis in East Devon.”
The La La choirs fundraising concert featuring the Ukulele Strumming Club takes place on February 22 from 7pm.
Tickets cost £6.50 and are available from the Honiton, Budleigh, Exmouth and Ottery St Mary Hospiscare shops or by calling 01392 688020.
