Ingenious aquarists at Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo and aquarium, have trained strange fish to help clean their tank of a naturally-occurring pest.

Filefish, or leatherjackets, have been introduced into the charity zoo’s large stingray tank to help control an invasive anemone.

Aquarist Tom Fielding: “Aiptasia is a common temperate and tropical sea anemone. It comes in through our filtration system when seawater is drawn from the Bay. It’s regarded as a pest in saltwater aquariums because it can multiply rapidly and compete for food and space and occasionally even...

Cricket betting is a very popular pass time activity around the world. There are several series and tournaments that take place every year, all with the potential to produce new winners. With cricket, predicting match outcomes can never be a viable way to win bets. Being one of the most followed games globally, punters of this game always have a wide array of markets to decide from. It is a game of the mind and luck even though it is decided over the space of 22 yards. Majority of cricket punters mainly do it for entertainment purposes. They usually keep tabs on their favourite teams and...

Environment-Friendly Methods To Eliminate Efflorescence

As much as environmentalists can be pressing at times, they often make very valid points. Humans are doing so much damage to the world around them, and we need to do something about it. If we don’t change our ways, it is almost a certainty that our children will not have an inhabitable world to live in. At this rate, too much damage will have happened in the years to come for us to repair. This is why it is important that we try to take as many precautions as possible in our daily lives. A good example of that is dealing with efflorescence, which needs to be done using environmentally...

Keepers at Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo, had to do a double-take recently when they discovered that European common lobster Homer had moulted for the first time in two years.

Aquarist Sam Worthington was particularly pleased, as it was the first time he’d moulted in her time at the charity zoo: “This exoskeleton is almost perfect - right down to the antennae and the eyes. Lobsters moult their protective outer shells in order to grow. It’s hard work – some die of exhaustion in the process. It’s made of chitin, a natural polymer related to glucose, which plays a similar role...

If there is one certain thing about life, it is the fact that nothing is certain. While that might sound a bit too philosophical, it is an unfortunate truth. It is also why you need to always be on guard because you stand to lose so much if you’re not. As the saying goes, you should always hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. The most obvious example of that is taking out insurance policies, even if you think you don’t need them since you can never really be sure. But do insurance policies have you covered if anything happens? If you have a homeowner’s insurance policy, would it...
