LETTER TO EDITOR I am writing to ask all readers in Exeter to join us this October for the UK’s biggest pink fundraiser, wear it pink. Wear it pink, Breast Cancer Now’s flagship fundraiser, takes place on Friday 20 October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to raise money for life-saving breast cancer research.

To get involved, all you have to do is ditch your everyday colours and pull on some pink and fundraise to help Breast Cancer Now achieve its aim that by 2050 everyone who develops breast cancer will live.

Devon authors vie for Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize

The Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize shortlist sees two local Devonshire authors vying for the £10,000 prize. Both Graham Hurley, author of Finisterre, and David Gilman, author of The Last Horseman, are published by independent publishing house Head of Zeus, which is based in London. David is resident in Totnes, whilst Graham lives in Exmouth.

The two authors are shortlisted for the prize, which recognises the best adventure novels published in the last calendar year. The prize first ran in 2016, and is open to writers of any nationality writing in English.

The opportunity to reward your community heroes with a free party is coming to an end in the next week.

People up and down the country have been asked to nominate their community heroes, people or groups who go above and beyond in their acts of kindness or in some cases, bravery.

Heroes nominated will be in with a chance to win one of five surprise parties in their honour, complete with catering, entertainment and drinks.

West Country firefighters support brave Grenfell colleagues

Firefighters in the South West, along with the TUC, raised more than £1,000 at the 3 day Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival in July for the Grenfell Firefighters’ Support Fund.

A cheque was presented last week (Wednesday 23 August) by Fire Brigades Union (FBU) South West official Tam McFarlane to a group of heroic firefighters from Battersea fire station who responded to the Grenfell fire. Thomas Westcott Chartered Accountants, which has a team of approximately 250 staff across Devon and Somerset, has been shortlisted for "Mid Tier Firm of the Year" at the prestigious British Accountancy Awards, the profession's annual "Oscars" event.

Lack of brisk walking puts Devon adults at risk

Findings from Public Health England (PHE) warn that thousands of adults aged 40-60 living in Devon are putting their health at risk by not managing a brisk ten minute walk each month.

As part of their new One You physical activity campaign, Public Health England have launched their new free Active 10 app encouraging adults to take one brisk ten minute walk a day. According to PHE research, this reduces the risk of early death by 15%, and contributes to their wider physical activity guidance of 150 minutes of moderate-vigorous exercise each week.

48% of dog owners in Devon could be breaking the law

As people take to their cars this August Bank Holiday, Dogs Trust, which has a Rehoming Centre in Ilfracombe, is launching ‘The Houndway Code’ a car safety awareness campaign after new research revealed that 17% of dog owners regularly travel with their dog unrestrained in the passenger seat of their car and 5% even reaching into the backseat to interact with their dog whilst at the wheel.

New kit for East Devon U13s football team

Budleigh Salterton AFC U13s are celebrating after receiving a new kit.

The kit was presented to members of the team by electricity company Western Power Distribution (WPD).

Keith Wood who works for WPD in Exeter and is the Club Secretary, said: “The sponsorship provided by WPD is gratefully received and I’m proud to work for a company that supplies this. It is a huge help and the girls are so pleased with their new kit.”

Sports champions from across East Devon were honoured last month at the East Devon District Council’s Chairman’s Garden Party held at Knowle in Sidmouth.

The 14 sporting heroes were nominated by their town and parish councils and they were invited to the party to thank them for their invaluable contribution to their local community.

University of Exeter gardener honoured by Queen will be sorely missed

Tributes have been paid to a well-loved and highly respected former University of Exeter gardener Gordon Newton MBE, who has passed away at the age of 71.
