Torquay school teacher conquers 203-mile trek

Last year 54-year old special school teacher Edward Thompson from Torquay set out to walk round Dartmoor on foot and climb 100 tors in 10 days for charity while living rough on the moor.

Exeter City’s fantastic undefeated away record came to a disappointing end by a 4-2 scoreline at the hands of in-form Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium.

On a freezing afternoon in the Midlands, the travelling Grecians had had very little to cheer in the first period. City trailed 3-0 at the interval, with Michael Symes, Marcus Holness and Jacques Maghoma all finding the net.

The game looked effectively over on 60 minutes when Brewers hit a fourth through Lee Bell, smashing from outside the box.

Guillem Bauza (pictured) and Scot Bennett reduced the...

Single parents in our family history & now: making a living and making it work

I have been a keen family historian for over 10 years. I also coordinate the ‘Exeter Single Parent Family Friendship Group (Exeter Gingerbread)’. Since becoming a single parent two years ago I have developed a connection with the single parents in my family tree. I have researched the circumstances that led to them becoming single parents and how they made a living in the historical and social context in which they lived.

My journey into researching family history began with my great, great grandfather’s birth certificate. Tubal Casely was born in 1848 in Wanstead, London. He is...
