More than half of young people put apprenticeships as 'first choice'

New data from research company ICM reveals that 57% of young people in the South West would choose to do an Apprenticeship if one were available. Nationally, the numbers of young people who would like to do an Apprenticeship rises to 56% of those who are already university students and 66% of those who are already employed, but receiving no training. The National Apprenticeship Service has launched a raft of new measures designed to help guide employers through the process of recruiting an apprentice. This follows yesterday’s announcement of the extension of the £1,500 Apprenticeship Grant for Employers of 16-24 year olds for another year. The grant, which is designed to help businesses (with fewer than 1000 employees) to recruit apprentices, has so far enabled over 30,000 young people to start an Apprenticeship. Twenty companies and apprentices will represent the wealth of Apprenticeship talent across the South West after being short-listed for the regional heat of the prestigious National Apprenticeship Awards 2013.

Exeter’s own Donna Yarwood is just one of the apprentices taking part. She has been shortlisted for Higher Apprentice of the Year.

South West Water creates 20 new apprenticeships

Up to 20 new apprenticeships are now being offered by South West Water as its successful programme is expanded.

The majority of the chosen trainees will be working within the company's waste water and drinking water teams and responsible for operating and maintaining assets such as pumping stations and large treatment works. A further three apprentices will work in the technical services team and will learn how to install, repair and maintain South West Water's electrical and process control systems.

Devon County Council is calling on small and medium-sized businesses to think about the benefits of offering an apprenticeship.

The Council is organising a special event at Sandy Park in Exeter on Tuesday 12 March to bring young people and potential employers together.

Businesses are being encouraged to sign up to the event to see how they could get involved and maybe find a suitable apprentice for their organisation.

The day starts with a Business Breakfast between 8-9am for those considering taking on apprentices to find out more information.

A hairdresser who graduated on an apprenticeship before opening her own salon seven months ago is now looking to mentor a trainee herself.
