Far too many older people spend Christmas entirely on their own, never receiving a single card or present. This past year, however, saw around 2,000 isolated and lonely older people who have contacted The Silver Line Helpline receive a gift and a card, thanks to a grant of £7,500 from Devonshire Freemasons through the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF), the freemasons charity.
The Silver Line offers emotional support and friendship to vulnerable and isolated older people. As well as its flagship 24/7 helpline, the charity offers a telephone befriending service which matches...
RGB Building Supplies is thanking the local community for supporting its Big RGB Christmas Appeal in aid of Devon Air Ambulance. The appeal invited people to donate good quality, pre-loved items to a drop point in RGB’s Exeter branch.
Bulk bags full of clothing, shoes, books, DVDs and Blu Rays, toys, accessories, jewellery and bric-a-brac were given and passed on to the charity. The items will now be sold in Devon Air Ambulance shops helping it continue to save hundreds of lives across Devon.
Tracy Owen, Fundraising Manager at Devon Air Ambulance, commented: “We would like...
Tuesday 10th December saw the return of the annual regional Lord’s Taverners Christmas lunch, taking place once again at Exeter’s famous Sandy Park. 636 attendees descended upon the grounds, to raise a record-breaking £73, 850 for charity. This amount will enable the Lord’s Taverners to continue their charity work, enhancing the lives of disabled young people; through the use of engaging sporting activities and events.
The afternoon required extensive planning from the chairman of the Devon & Cornwall Lord's Taverners, David Kirk and this year’s committee members (as pictured...
The Recycled Candle Company is urging people not to throw away used candles from the festive season but to recycle them instead.
With many people in the process of taking down decorations and returning their homes to a pre-Christmas state, it’s a good time to remember that used candles can be recycled rather than added to landfill.
Candles are very popular during the festivities, gracing tables, sideboards, fireplaces and shelves around the home. But once they reach the end of their useful life, they are usually put into the bin.
Thousands of meals have been donated to food banks and groups feeding people, thanks to the generosity of Tesco’s Exeter shoppers, figures released today reveal.

These donations to food banks in the Trussell Trust’s network are being used to provide food parcels for people in crisis, while donations to...

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) is urging people only to call 999 this Christmas if someone is seriously ill or injured, or their life is at risk.
Demand for the ambulance service is likely to peak over the next two weeks when staff are expecting to respond to more than 3,000 calls a day.
Paramedics and Control Room staff warn that unnecessary calls over the festive period could delay responses to those patients most in need of emergency help.
The Trust has launched its ‘12 Days of Christmas’ campaign, encouraging people to use the...
