The Castle Drogo Youth Panel has planned a free community open evening to celebrate Museums at Night on Friday 15 May. From 6pm until 9pm, the gates will be flung open for all local people to come up and enjoy spending time at the castle outside normal opening hours. The Youth Panel’s aim is for this to be a chilled out evening where visitors can stroll in the garden, relax on the lawns, listen to music and watch the sun go down. Trill Farm, the 300 acre organic farm and education centre near Axminster, will be participating in this national event - Open Farm Sunday - for the first time in 2015, on Sunday 7th June between 11am - 4pm.

Each year since 2006, Open Farm Sunday has seen hundreds of UK farms open up their gates to the public on the same day across the country. Enjoy the thrill of horseracing at Newton Abbot Racecourse on Tuesday 19th May.

Racing starts at 17:30, with gates opening at 15:30. The last race is at 20:30.

Tickets will be priced at £18 for the Paddock Enclosure and £12 for the Course Enclosure. Tickets will be available for purchase online until 17:00 on Monday 18th May. There will be tickets available at the gate on the day.

Cheriton Fitzpaine welcomes French visitors

Cherition Fitzpaine Twinning Association welcomed 28 visitors from their twinned village of Bonnebosq in Normandy for an action-packed weekend.

The French visitors arrived last Friday and were given a warm welcome in Cheriton Fitzpaine Parish Hall by chairman Geoff Yeandle.

On the Friday evening lively group meals hosted at various members’ homes.

On Saturday everyone went to Exmouth for a Stuart Line cruise along the River Exe, then dined at the Nutwell Lodge.

Dissenters Graveyard wins Lottery support

Exeter Dissenters Graveyard Trust (EDGT) has received £60,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, Phase 2 of the restoration of the Dissenters Graveyard in Magdalen Street, Exeter.

This phase, which starts in late May, will continue the process of rescuing the graveyard from dereliction.

Led by volunteers from the local community, the project will repair gravestones and monuments, install wrought iron gates, put railings on the side with a sheer drop, repair and re-point walls, and remove intrusive and damaging tree stumps.

Alpacas to charm Devon County Show visitors

A new family-friendly alpaca feature will be unveiled for the first time on the third day of the Devon County Show (May 21-23) at Westpoint, Exeter.

Visitors will be able to get close to the woolly South American animals as part of a day of activities and demonstrations to help them ‘get to know alpacas better’.
