With local elections in East Devon taking place on 7 May (coinciding with the date for the General Election), Returning Officer Mark Williams will shortly be embarking on a mini tour of the district to explain the procedures for standing as candidates for towns, parishes or the district council.
The events will be in Axminster, Cranbrook, Exmouth and Honiton.
The roadshows are a repeat of an initiative Mark has undertaken every four years in the run-up to local elections to make people aware that they could play an active part in local democracy either representing their...
This March sees Rock Solid Race returning to Escot Park for the third time – bringing with it more obstacles, more races and more days to do it in (the event will be running on both days this year).
Founder and owner Ashley Jardine is thrilled with the reaction to the event. Having left a safe career as an Optician just three years ago, he took a big gamble on carving out a new career in Obstacle Racing. It looks like it has paid off.
“Just three years ago, Escot Park was our very first event and since then we have become known as being one of the best races around.”...

Chef Robin Rea and his team are busy planning various events to be held at the Ottery St Mary eaterie throughout the year, including quizzes and themed dining.
Robin said: “I’ve been aware of the charity for some time and I really admire the selfless work carried out by the volunteer riders. They do a great job for the people of Devon, and I’m delighted to support them.”
Additionally, Robin is hoping to run a food stand at this year’s...
East Devon District Council cabinet has recommended that an extensive refurbishment and replacement programme be put in place to improve the current provision of its popular beach huts and chalets at Sidmouth, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Seaton and Beer.
To ensure the economic viability and sustainability of the beach huts, as an enduring local amenity, a sinking fund of £19,000 will be established, which will enable new beach hut schemes to be created. It will also mean that old huts, which have reached the end of their life, can be replaced.

Broadclyst’s new £9,000 outdoor gym is ready to use! East Devon District Council has been working hard with Broadclyst Parish Council to provide residents with the free-to-use outdoor gym that they wanted.
Having an outdoor gym in Broadclyst was proposed and chosen by the local community. Earlier this year Broadclyst Parish Council and EDDC asked community groups and others to put forward their ideas as to how £11,800 of sports funding accumulated from recent local housing developments (Section 106 money) should be spent.
These ideas were then taken out to residents and...
Two young Shelduck were recently released back into the wild at Axe Estuary Wetlands after being nursed back to health at the RSPCA Wildlife Centre at West Hatch in Somerset.
Jo Schmidt, RSPCA wildlife assistant, said: “The ducklings were brought to us in September, as they had lost their mother and had problems with their feet and feathers. We kept them outside and monitored them until we were satisfied their essential feathers were waterproof again, and that their feet had healed.”
Steve Edmonds, East Devon District Council Countryside Team Leader said: “Axe Estuary...
Changes in government guidance on what councils can ask small developers to pay for community benefits are set to hit the provision of open spaces, sports and play areas and even education upgrades in East Devon.
Until recently, anyone who wanted to build an estate of new homes was required to offset the impact the new households would have on existing amenities by making a ‘Section 106’ financial contribution towards improvements.
But changes announced by the Government at the beginning of December mean that East Devon District Council and other affected planning...
Palm Oil is washing up on some beaches along East Devon’s Jurassic Coastline. Although it is not normally harmful to humans or birds, it can prove toxic to dogs if they eat it.
East Devon District Council is warning dog owners to beware of their pets eating the substance. And the council is offering to pick up any clumps of congealed palm oil that are reported to it.
If you find this substance on the beach, please contact East Devon District Council to arrange removal. You can call 01395 516551 or tell us via the Report Litter form on the East Devon App.
