Global electrical and electronic components manufacturer Carling Technologies has completed work on a solar energy installation at its European headquarters in Devon that is expected to reduce the site’s annual CO2 emissions by an estimated 383 tonnes. The distribution centre in Exeter transports components to industrial vehicle, bus and truck companies throughout Europe, with 80% of its revenue coming from export sales. I am not normally alarmist, but increasingly find myself very concerned that our global food systems are under exceptional pressures. We might even say four frightening horse riders stalk our world at this time…

The first is called ‘Global Warming’.

A few months ago ASDA announced that it may not be able to guarantee supply of 95% of the foodstuffs it now sells in twelve months time. Most of the fresh produce sold in their shops is already at risk from climate change. The company’s director for sustainable business suggested that it is imperative that supermarkets start to...

Warning over solar subsidy cuts

Government proposals to cut subsidies to large solar farms could be extremely detrimental for the South West, according to one of the Westcountry’s leading renewable energy lawyers.

In a move which would end the current system two years early, the proposal is to force owners of solar power installations which are larger than 5 megawatts to compete with other renewable energy technologies for financing.

Sonya Bedford a partner and head of renewable energy at Stephens Scown LLP said: “This could be potentially devastating for the Westcountry. With the highest irradiation...

A FIRM which helps agricultural businesses convert their waste into ‘green’ fuel, is celebrating after achieving an internationally-recognised quality mark. New Generation Biogas, based in Totnes, has been awarded the ISO 9001: 2008 by QAS International (Quality Management Systems) for its design, manufacture and installation of plant and equipment for the production of biogas. NG Biogas makes anaerobic-digesters, which break down biodegradable waste and transform it into gas, which can then be burnt to provide heat, electricity or vehicle fuel. The units enable small to medium sized farms...

Over seventy families from council owned properties across Exeter have joined a University of Bath study that aims to reduce energy use within homes. It has long been known that identical homes with identical numbers of occupants differ greatly in the amount they spend on energy. The University of Bath is now carrying out work to establish why this is. Exeter City Council has worked with the University to recruit residents with suitable properties for the study, in which computer scientists, architects, engineers and psychologists have come together to develop a better understanding of how...
