EXETER CIVIL SERVICE 1-1 ALPHINGTON

The all-Exeter derby ended in a draw as Exeter Civil Service and Alphington finished 1-1 at Foxhayes in the SouthWest Peninsula Div 1 East.

This was probably the last time Exeter Civil Service in their current guise will host the neighbours before a summer name change. A strong crowd as well as a decent pitch and weather set the basis for a fiery contest which didn't disappoint.

Both of the city's suburban sides started lively with several early chances. The opener, though, came from an unlikely source - when Paul Gibbins made a...

Cricket club onto a great run with completion of new pavilion

After months of dedication, work on the new Heathcoat Cricket Club Pavilion is on the verge of completion at the National Trust estate, Knightshayes, near Tiverton.

All the volunteers who helped with the project are now eagerly awaiting the arrival of former England cricket captain, Mike Gatting, who will be adding final touches to the ground on Saturday 6 April.

Established in the 1920s by John Heathcoat Amory for his Tiverton factory workers, the Heathcoat Cricket Club has always had a strong association with Knightshayes and the local community.

Exeter City Council seeks views on sex establishment policy

People can have their say on Exeter City Council's Sex Establishment Policy.

The current interim policy limits the number of Sex Entertainment Venues (SEVs) to one in the City Centre and zero elsewhere. It also restricts the number of sex shops to two.

The Council would like to consult Exeter residents and other interested parties on whether this is appropriate to have a policy and if so, what sort of controls and conditions should be included to ensure that the premises are situated in appropriate locations and properly managed.

A consultation questionnaire was...

Dawlish Strand regeneration taking shape

Work is progressing well on the £1.5 million regeneration of Dawlish Strand.

The scheme, which is a joint initiative between Devon County , Teignbridge District and Dawlish Town Councils , is taking shape, with the removal of the wall, shelter and large shrubs visually opening The Lawns up to The Strand.

Large sections of the Yorkstone paving and granite kerbs have been laid along The Lawns side, together with the installation of new Granite kerbs and drainage.

Work is also underway outside of the shops, at the west end of The Strand. As work increases in this area...

Persimmon Homes South West and its employees managed to raise £2,156 by holding several fundraising activities throughout 2012 for their chosen charity the Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT).

Caroline Creer, fundraising director at the Devon Air Ambulance Trust, said: “It’s fantastic that Persimmon Homes South West has raised such a significant amount. Being independent of Government and National Lottery funding, events just like this go a long way in raising the £4...

Exeter Pride proves to be an event the whole city can be proud of

After the torrential rain of the previous two days, Saturday 23 March was fortuitously dry for the Exeter Pride 2013 parade down Exeter High Street, which kicked off all manner of Pride events in celebration of the lesbian gay bisexual and transgender community.

At first gathering at the St Sidwell's Centre on Sidwell Street, an excited buzz built up from 12pm ahead of the 1pm parade down Exeter High Street. Led from the front by the ever-cheerful Chair Alan Quick, a most colourful procession made its way down the High Street brandishing a 50-metre long rainbow flag. Incorporating...

Feniton's Black Day march fights plans for large-scale development

Sir Max Hastings was one of the first national figures to express support for the Black Day for the Countryside mass march, held at Feniton on Saturday (23 March). In an e-mail to the organisers, he said, "I wish you the very very best of luck in a fight which is the fight of everybody who cares both about the English countryside and the democratic rights of local communities". Best wishes, Max Hastings.

Ben Bradshaw, MP, though unable to attend, sent a message saying, "I would have loved to come on the march" and "Congratulations on all your recent campaigning".

This winter, like the economic depression, seems to be going on and on.

The coldest March for decades was an appropriate backdrop to George Osborne's latest gloom-laden budget. True, there was some minor relief for hard-pressed motorists and beer drinkers (though not if your tipple is Devon cider or Plymouth Gin) but the rest of it was a miserable affair as the Chancellor was forced to cut his growth and raise his borrowing forecasts yet again.

The economy has now grown just 0.7% since 2010 compared with the 5.3% forecast at the time. Only two other G20 countries have grown...

Devon adds its voice to TB campaign

NHS and council organisations in Devon added their voice to the ‘Stop TB in my Lifetime’ TB campaign, to mark World TB Day (24 March).

And as part of its work with local partners across Devon, the public health team, which will shortly become part of Devon County Council, has been working with partners in Teignbridge District Council to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of tuberculosis, otherwise known as TB, and help spread the message that the disease is treatable.

John Wales, a 62-year-old married father of five who lives in Newton Abbot, was diagnosed with TB in...

'Follow' the Passion in 'real time' throughout Holy Week

The Diocese of Exeter is tweeting the whole passion story, from Palm Sunday to sunrise on Easter Sunday. The story has been rewritten for tweeting in the first person and from Jesus’s perspective and will be sent out in ‘real time’ throughout Holy Week. Canon Andrew Godsall said: “The idea with tweeting the passion is to help people relate to a familiar story in a contemporary way. Jesus used contemporary phrases all of the time. He wanted to make people sit up and listen so he used provocative words. Sometimes people got the wrong end of the stick – and maybe he did that deliberately -...
