Public safety around cliffs a priority for EDDC

East Devon District Council has almost completed its annual cliff inspections at Sidmouth’s Connaught Gardens, Beer’s East Beach and East Cliff at Budleigh Salterton.

As a matter of emergency, Seaton West Walk cliffs were done earlier in the year, due to a recent cliff fall. It is anticipated that all the inspections will be finished by mid April.

A popular stretch of the South West Coast Path has been reopened ahead of the main walking season, with a new route through Natural England’s Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs National Nature Reserve.

The Path was closed and diverted inland almost two years ago at the western end of the Undercliffs, after an ongoing landslip resulted in the area becoming unsafe for walkers. Exmouth schoolchildren ride the Avocet Line

Pupils from Marpool Primary School in Exmouth recently took a free train trip on the Avocet Line which links Exmouth and Exeter, to visit Exeter Cathedral as part of their Religious Education studies.

The trip was organised by the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership under their “Train trips for schoolchildren” initiative. This aims to introduce more children to rail travel and is run in conjunction with Great Western Railway, who provided free travel for the children and teachers.

A regional fundraising campaign to save a vital community, education and business resource for future generations has been launched in Exmouth.

Waste of Space is urging people to support efforts to save the former Rolle College for the future of young people’s education in Devon, and to transform the facility into the Rolle Centre ¬– a thriving business, education and community resource for East Devon.

Jewellery taken from Exmouth home

Police are appealing for help to trace irreplaceable items of jewellery taken from a house in Exmouth.

Offenders forced a back door to get inside the property in Barnfield Road between 5.30pm and 8.40pm on Thursday 17 March, while the occupants were out.

They escaped with a large amount of jewellery, including distinctive items of sentimental value such as engraved wedding rings and 80-year-old cufflinks.

New Phear Park play area opens

Phear Park’s new improved play area, featuring £48,000 of exciting leisure equipment, was officially declared open on Monday 21 March 2016 by East Devon District Council’s Chairman Councillor Stuart Hughes and Exmouth Town Mayor Councillor Maddy Chapman, who is also ward member for Exmouth Brixington.

National Campaign to save Exmouth's Rolle Centre

A national fundraising campaign to save the former Rolle Centre is to be launched in Exmouth.

Details about the ‘Waste of Space’ campaign are being kept under wraps until the launch event, at the Owen Building at the former Rolle College site in the town, at 11am on Tuesday April 5.

Owner Plymouth University wants to sell the site, on Douglas Avenue, and has applied for outline planning permission to build up to 120 homes.

Members of the Conservative Group on EDDC and Exmouth Town Council saw for themselves how work is progressing on the new £1.2 million Mamhead Slipway when they visited the project on Monday (7 March). The first task of contractors Raymond Brown Construction Ltd is to clear the Mamhead Gardens area to the side of the existing slipway, which will allow towing vehicles and trailers to manoeuvre, making access to the new ramp easier. Exmouth homes to benefit from improved flood defences

East Devon District Council is working with the Environment Agency to upgrade the sea and estuary defences in Exmouth. The proposed project will reduce the risk of flooding to over 1,000 homes in Exmouth.

Since Autumn 2015, the council’s Exeter based consultants WSP │ Parsons Brinkerhoff have reviewed information gathered from flood modelling, a topographic survey and geotechnical investigations and developed a number of options to upgrade Exmouth’s flood defences along the estuary side and sea front.
