Golfers invited to aim for national glory

Golfers from across the South West will make their way to Staddon Heights Golf Club in Plymouth early next month in their quest to qualify for the final of a national competition.

The annual Licensed Trade Charity Golf Tournament sees teams of four golfers taking each other on in a series of regional qualifiers. The Devon heat, taking place on Friday 4th September, allows golfers of any standard to play at one of the South West’s premier golf courses and puts them within 18 holes of representing the county at the Sky-sponsored Grand Final in North Berwick in October.

82-year-old golfer plays 300th course

Jim Dowie, an 82 year old golfer from Exmouth has just reached a remarkable golfing milestone by playing on over 300 golf courses worldwide.

Jim, who is a member of Exeter Golf and Country Club set himself the 300 target back in 1997 when he was a mere lad aged just 64 when he started playing the game. Prior to taking-up golf, Jim played badminton at county level for many years.

Since then, Jim has played golf in 26 countries worldwide and whilst most of his golf has been played in the United Kingdom, the list of countries he has played in reads like an international travel...

Golfers lined up in the bright sunshine to take part in Exeter’s popular Marnie Burgoyne Memorial Golf Day.

Nearly 50 teams enjoyed a great day out and raised cash for us. The Exeter tournament is sponsored by John Burgoyne, who runs Burgoynes Estate Agents and the trophy is presented in memory of his mum, Marnie Burgoyne, who was one of the original Hospiscare fundraising committee members.

Our Hospiscare nurses cared for Marie in her own home and for the last ten days of her life they looked after her in the hospice.

Happy Fez-iversary to Martin and his fundraising army

Yesterday (28 May) marked the first anniversary of a unique fundraising idea to raise money for Exeter cancer charity FORCE.

The Fez campaign led by Martin Lynn has brought in close to £20,000.

It’s a remarkable achievement by the Exeter father-of-three, who is battling a rare cancer of the immune system.

He and some of his close lieutenants in the Fez Army got together for a celebratory lunch to mark the occasion and begin planning for the next year.

New initiatives for young golfers at Exeter golf club

Exeter Golf and Country Club has launched new initiatives to encourage more young people to play golf and help reverse the national decline in young golfers.

Reports by England Golf and the English Golf Union demonstrate the decrease in golfers aged under 30 years old. Both organisations recommend strategies to help golf clubs rectify this and future proof talent in the sport, along with increasing the overall number of golf members nationally.

Exeter golf course to be redesigned

Exeter Golf and Country Club has secured funding from Charles Church, part of the Persimmon Group, towards the redesign of its golf course. The deal comes after two years of negotiations between the Club and housebuilder over how to ensure the safety of residents of Great Woodcote Park, a new housing development being built next to the golf course.
